The mobile-only streaming platform Quibi was poised to revolutionize how audiences consumed media, as it broke down long-form stories into digestible installments of less than ten minutes. To bring in subscribers when it launched in 2020, Quibi enlisted the talents of a number of compelling storytellers, which included writer/director Veena Sud developing the thriller series The Stranger, which starred Maika Monroe and Dane DeHaan. Sadly, one of the major setbacks the platform faced was that it launched as the coronavirus pandemic was kicking off, which meant viewers were more interested in what they could stream on their TVs. When Quibi called it quits later in 2020, it sold off its titles to The Roku Channel, but Sud wasn't content to let the project languish in an overlooked corner of TV and has brought back the project for Hulu, where it is now streaming.

The Stranger is described, "New to Los Angeles, rideshare driver Clare (Maika Monroe, star of It Follows and Neon's upcoming Longlegs) picks up Carl (Dane DeHaan, recently seen in Oppenheimer and star of HBO's The Staircase) from a home deep in the Hollywood Hills. What begins as a routine ride turns into Clare's worst nightmare: a twelve-hour fight for survival through the city's seedy underbelly. Carl is not the passenger Clare thought he was, and Clare is not easy prey...Avan Jogia (Victorious, Now Apocalypse) also stars in this thriller, coming soon to Hulu as a new feature-length film."

The Stranger marked a unique opportunity for Sud, as the story was specifically developed as an episodic experience optimized for mobile phones, though she has since reimagined the entire project to deliver genre fans a cohesive feature film.

ComicBook.com caught up with Sud to talk the experience of making the project, revisiting it all these years later, and rekindling her passion for the adventure.

ComicBook.com: When you think back on actually making the series or even writing the show, were there times when you were developing it where you thought, "You know what? I'm really excited about this, but I do wish that it was a feature film," or was that something that didn't even really dawn on you until you had this opportunity?

Veena Sud: Well, from the very get-go, at my very first meeting with [Quibi's] Jeffrey [Katzenberg], he did say, "Look, part of the perks of trying this new art form is I'm giving the artist the copyright to their own work." So that itself just opened up so many doors in my own mind, and for all of us, that we were basically given the opportunity to make this one very, very, very, very, very specific type of thing that most likely could not live anywhere else, but if we were crafty enough, we could figure out how to make it live on and on and on and on in whatever form.

What I chose, just because the math made sense, it was 10-minute episodes. Whatever it was, 10 episodes, I don't even remember now, but it was basically the length of a feature film and it followed, if not the true three-act structure, there was an inherent, usual hero's journey in it because it was a limited series as conceptualized by Quibi. I did know going in -- now I have to think about this as episodic, but also how it can come together as a feature.

We had to shoot it that way, which was even more interesting. It was such a challenge for all of us. My DP, Paul Yee, is just a genius, and my production designer, Jenny M?ller, was amazing, because we spent so much time talking about, "Let's see something one way but continue to be able to have the capacity at some point to walk away with footage and see it another way, horizontal versus vertical."

As you were revisiting and re-imagining the material, was there something that you came across that made you think, "Ah, if only I could have told 2019 Veena this while on set,"? Is there anything like that where you thought, "I wish that there was something I had done differently when bringing the series to life back then,"?

Well, that's a really good question, because I think all of us ... I've looked back at every single thing I've done, and I was just like, "Oh, good God. Seriously, you wrote that, you thought that?" I think that structurally, though, in this specific incident, no, because it was designed from the get as both. The big question was does it work as both?

I knew after looking at the finished Quibi series, yes, it worked as the TV episodic. But it wasn't until me and my editor sat down and we put it all together and we smoothed out and we took some shots out and replaced with others that we said, "Does this even work? Let's take a look." It felt like it did, and for people who watched it on Quibi, what this version allowed was this much more material and this much more material, because the screen now was this versus that.

Well, and that's another thing, because I'm someone who watched not only the original version, but also this version. And so, for other people who maybe watched it originally and now it's a different thing and it's coming to Hulu, what do you think might be the biggest difference other than necessarily just the platform? Structurally or story-wise, what would be the reason that is so fulfilling for people to revisit in this recontextualized format?

I think so much of what I imagined when I was thinking of it as a feature was the visceral pleasure of walking through a city that we think we know that we don't know. And so, I purposely picked locations that aren't the typical L.A. things. I feel like L.A., it's such an iconic city, but the parts of the city in the film, it's the noir L.A. I was like, "This is a noir city. Let's see it as such." And so, I think the visceral pleasure of being able to see this much, this big on your big home TV or on your laptop is certainly a different experience than this.

What I loved about the tiny, vertical experience was we created this thing called, or we didn't create it but we thought about it when we were shooting, Z depth. Instead of our usual left, right, expansive, blah, blah, we had to think about going into the screen. That's why we shot things behind her when she's moving forward. I talked about this before, we pushed the candy aisles closer to her in the gas station so you would feel things moving so you wouldn't be bored just seeing a floating head like we are in FaceTime with each other. It created its own visual language, which was propulsive. I think this visual language of this story is very noir, classically noir. So in the same way that kitchen table dramas feel different than epics, it's a visceral kind of difference and experience in the story.

Something very specific that maybe I paid more attention to or resonated with me more than you had even initially planned is the ringtone in the movie, because any time you're watching a movie and someone's using, say, an Android product and you hear the Apple ringtone, I'm always thinking, "Wait, what? What's going on here?" So, the ringtone was this very unique, creepy, familiar sound but had something very ominous about it. Can you talk at all about just what that process was like finding that specific tone, if it was just something you came across, or if it was designed specifically for this story?

The ringtone on Dane, the bad guy's text, was very purposeful and was designed. That was a Quibi invention. And, again, I think what was so pleasurable about Quibi is that we had to reinvent things and be like, "Okay, how do I get attention? How do I get people to look at phones when we are looking at 20 million things on our phones? And what is the experience of a phone?" The one common denominator for literally, oh, my gosh, every single person on the face of the Earth is we all have an opening rush when we hear our phone go off. And so, I was like, "Okay, how do we use that thing that we're feeling to scare the sh-t out of us?"

We talked about, every time an episode would drop in a person's phone who subscribed to Quibi, that ringtone would hit. And at one point, we were talking about if we dropped all of the episodes over the course of 12 hours, every hour you would get that creepy-ass ringtone. So mid-season, when it's at the scariest and bad guys chasing them through the streets of L.A. at 2 a.m., you get that ringtone. You wake up, and you're like, "Oh, my God." Then you watch the thing, because it's addictive, and then you go to sleep and maybe even dream about it.

It was like, again, how do we engage with a thing that engages with us versus the traditional television or movie screen that we sit in front and take in? We get to engage back and forth with it, so that was the purpose of a very specific ringtone. When you heard it on your phone you would know exactly what it was, and you've become acclimated over the course of many episodes to have, not a dopamine reaction, but a reaction of fear and trepidation to it.

This journey with Maika as Clare, there's definitely a resolution, but it can't help but leave you wondering what is next in her life. Was this something traumatic she never recovered from? Was this something that was empowering to her? For you, revisiting this as a creative, has that sparked some storytelling flames within you of wanting to maybe revisit Clare's character and what would be next for her? Or was this almost more of a closing of the book, given the tumultuous journey of Quibi and you finally get this opportunity to make sure that audiences get to check out this thing you put so much heart and soul into?

I think for any writer or creator, it's always like I'm intrigued by what organically comes next. So, yeah, I don't close chapters very well. I keep trying to get my TV shows back on TV. I'm the zombie TV creator, and so nothing ever dies.

I feel that, who knows? Especially given what's going to happen later in 2024. This movie is about schooling and beating toxic masculinity, and we're in real life about to f-cking go down that road again, potentially. Who knows what will come out? But I do love the idea, and I always love the idea of telling a story where we get to win at the end. She won, and she changed, and she went from a woman who understandably cries in the face of extreme terror to a woman that says, "No more."

The Stranger is now streaming on Hulu.

AEW President Tony Khan Responds to WWE's Reported Interest in Collaboration With Other Wrestling Promotions (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/aew-president-tony-khan-responds-wwe-interest-collaboration-wrestling-promotions-exclusive/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 15:19:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 44c275a1-d4ed-45a8-be51-ba6714dc7bd1

Wrestling has more than one... wrestling company.

After decades of operating like the only show in town, WWE has begun to loosen the locks on its forbidden door. While WWE has name-dropped promotions like Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling on television before, it was only in the 2020s that WWE began to have deliberate collaborations with other companies. Karl Anderson was allowed to defend his NEVER Openweight Championship in NJPW while under WWE contract. Shinsuke Nakamura stepped inside a Pro Wrestling NOAH ring during The Great Muta's retirement tour. TNA Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace entered the Women's Royal Rumble. Shayna Baszler was permitted to compete at GCW Bloodsport during WWE WrestleMania 40 weekend.

Sporadic as they might be, these crossovers are sewing the seeds for WWE to set up longer term working relationships. Sports Illustrated reported that WWE President Nick Khan is especially keen on this, as contacts surrounding him have indicated that he is looking "to engineer a collaboration with other professional wrestling promotions." Khan was named as the one to green light WWE's recent one-off crossover with TNA, which saw WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque and then-TNA President Scott D'Amore work out Grace's aforementioned WWE Royal Rumble appearance.

One infinity stone missing from WWE's crossover gauntlet is All Elite Wrestling. Launching in 2019, AEW immediately established itself as the second-largest professional wrestling company in the world and quickly rose from an alternative option to a challenger brand.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan responded to the report that WWE was open to collaborations.

"If WWE came calling to you to do, not even necessarily a collaborative show, but just share talent, share promotion, would you consider AEW to be open for business with WWE?" ComicBook.com's Liam Crowley asked Tony.

"It's an interesting thought," Tony responded. "It would depend on the circumstance."

While outright crossovers have yet to happen, WWE and AEW have done business together before. Billy Gunn appeared and spoke on stage during D-Generation X's televised WWE Hall of Fame induction in April 2019, three months into his AEW contract. Tony granted Bryan Danielson, Chris Jericho, and Paul Wight permission to send pre-recorded videos in to WWE Monday Night Raw for John Cena's wrestling anniversary special.

Things have stalled since, as AEW did not allow Billy Gunn to participate in a D-Generation X reunion on a Fall 2022 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw. AEW reportedly requested that WWE acknowledge Gunn's status as a member of the AEW roster on the broadcast, and when WWE refused, AEW pulled back on allowing the appearance. It's as to how much communication there is between the two companies today, but its worth noting that WWE did not even reach out to AEW for a potential Jon Moxley appearance at WWE WrestleMania 40 during The Shield reunion moment in the main event.

Fallout Stars React to Shocking Moments, Share Hopes for Season 2 https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-stars-react-to-shocking-moments-share-hopes-for-season-2/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 01:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0753d5c5-c822-430b-9d35-f18146b195e0

All eight episodes of Fallout dropped on Prime Video this week, and it's already a huge hit with critics and audiences alike. The new series is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% critics score and 85% audience score. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new show a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." Naturally, fans are eager to find out if the show will be getting another season from Amazon. While there hasn't been an official announcement yet, the cast is already thinking about the potential next season.

ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with the cast at the show's Los Angeles premiere, and they reacted to some of the show's shocking moments and shared their hopes for the future. Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead!

The Surface Dwellers

(Photo: Prime Video)

In the first episode, Lucy (Ella Purnell) marries Monty (Cameron Cowperthwaite), who is a surface-dweller pretending to be from Vault 32. Monty's true identity is revealed quite quickly, so we asked the actor what it was like learning about his character's early turn.

"I think it just is in line with the show," Cowperthwaite explained. "The show is just going to keep you guessing at every possible turn. When you think you got it, they're going to take you somewhere else. And they've done such a good job at teasing all of that and keeping it grounded and real. And I was just so stoked to be a part of something that kind of sets this world on fire. ... That it really ignites the passion of the show and what we're really trying to accomplish, which is just your high-octane entertainment."

Dane's Decision

screen-shot-2024-04-12-at-1-34-21-pm.png
(Photo: Prime Video)

Early in the season, Dane (Xelia Mendes-Jones) is injured when someone puts razor blades in his shoe, which causes Maximus (Aaron Moten) to take their place as Knight Titus' squire. However, the end of the season revealed Dane put the blades in his shoe himself because he was afraid to leave.

"I was actually the only person who knew that until that script came out," Mendes-Jones revealed. "I was told that when we shot the initial injury ... I wasn't that surprised by it. I knew a little bit more about who Dane is and what he's all about. But yeah, I think it's a real twist. I think people won't expect it. I think it's a great example of how well [showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner] and [director/executive producer Jonathan Nolan] understand the games, but no character is only one thing."

"I think I would love to see more about his relationship with Maximus, especially after the events of season one," Mendes-Jones said of their season two hopes for Dane. "And I would love to see what's driven his decisions this season, where that's coming from."

The Unsuspecting Ghoul

(Photo: Prime Video)

Soon after Maximus becomes the squire for Titus, the knight is killed and Maximus takes his place. He lies to the Brotherhood of Steel, so they send him a new squire, Thaddeus (Johnny Pemberton). Maximus decides to tell Thaddeus the truth, but the squire doesn't take it well, and they fight, resulting in Thaddeus' foot getting crushed. Later, Thaddeus meets a "doctor" who gives him a cure for his injury, but it turns out it does more than heal, and Thaddeus is turned into a Ghoul.

"Oh, that's been hard to sit on," Pemberton said of the Ghoul twist. "I'm relieved. Yes, for sure. But also, it's a thing where it's to be determined. We don't know what's going to happen. Obviously, there's a lot to be decided. But it's great. I am very happy."

Reg's Vote

screen-shot-2024-04-12-at-1-36-45-pm.png
(Photo: Prime Video)

We also spoke with Rodrigo Luzzi about his character Reg's defining moment in the show, which is when he doesn't vote for himself to be Overseer of Vault 33.

"I think Reg is at war with himself, and he just always wants to do the right thing, and I think he felt that that was the right thing to do," Luzzi explained. "I don't know anything about it, but I would love to have a season two just to keep exploring this massive world. I feel like this thing could go on for a while."

Vault 4's True Nature

screen-shot-2024-04-12-at-1-37-33-pm.png
(Photo: Prime Video)

While chatting with Chris Parnell (Overseer Benjamin), we asked about Vault 4 and how their seemingly sinister nature ended up being quite innocent.

"Oh, it's just fun," Parnell shared. "It's fun to see how he appears in the beginning and like, 'Oh, maybe he's not such a great guy.' But you realize that most of the people, a lot of people in the vaults are just earnest, 'Golly gee.' They have these old American values and for the better, mostly, some for the worst."

"Maybe a dance hall, a disco tent," Parnell joked when asked what he would want to see in Vault 4 in season two. "Maybe a fabulous, enormous, deep multilayered disco tent."

Barb the Villain

screen-shot-2024-04-12-at-1-51-00-pm.png
(Photo: Prime Video)

One of the biggest twists of the show is the reveal that Barb (Frances Turner) suggested Vault-Tec drop the bombs themselves.

"I was surprised," Turner shared. "I wasn't expecting to go that way, but it is very exciting as an actor to be able to slowly build that, and layer that in, and come up with and talk to Geneva and Graham about the why ... That was very exciting and I'm very excited to see [what's next]."

Steph's Secrets

screen-shot-2024-04-12-at-1-38-25-pm.png
(Photo: Prime Video)

It's revealed that everyone from Vault 31 is actually a Vault-Tec employee from the past who froze themselves in cryogenic pods. Among the fake Vaulters is Stephanie (Annabel O'Hagan).

"You first start filming, so every little bit of information that I'm getting from episode to episode, closer and closer, and more and more excited," O'Hagan explained of working up to the big twist. "I would be so honored to come back and jump in the suit."

Lucy Leaves

(Photo: Prime Video)

While speaking with Ella Purnell (Lucy), we brought up the sad moment in the final episode where she leaves Maximus behind.

"It was hard to film," she admitted.

"Just being able to get back together with the gang," she added when asked about her hopes for season two. "Honestly, I love my friends and this crew and the cast so much and it would just be a really happy experience."

Tight-Lipped

(Photo: Prime Video)

Some folks were playing coy about the show's future.

"I think it's exciting. I think it's exciting. I wouldn't know and there's so many possibilities," Moises Arias (Norm) shared with a smile.

"We try to concentrate on one season at a time," director/executive producer Jonthan Nolan explained.

Fallout Stunt Performer Talks Power Armor and Shares Hopes For Future Seasons https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-stunt-performer-power-armor-shares-hopes-for-future-seasons-game-characters/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 22:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0c5a94c2-9d7b-4f2f-9a7e-1951d91b8bad

Fallout is now streaming on Prime Video, and the show is already a hit with fans of the game series. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new show a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." ComicBook.com recently talked with the show's executive producers, and they revealed the most important thing when adapting the game was the tone. Of course, they also did a great job of capturing the world of Fallout, and the show's cast is eager for more. We also spoke with stunt performer, Adam Shippey, who spends much of the show in the power armor. He even showed up to the premiere in the iconic suit. It was a particularly hot day in Los Angeles, so we asked how that compared to being in the suit on set.

"I'm conditioned to it at this point," Shippey said of wearing the suit in uncomfortable weather. "It's like putting on an old comfortable pair of pants that are really, really heavy." he joked. "I mean, actually this is quite nice. We were filming in New York in August, upstate swelter, humid. We were filming in Namibia, in Salt Flats in Utah, dry air conditions, your lips are drying out."

We also asked Shippey how he channels the different characters he's portraying when in the suit.

"Well, the interesting thing is it's not just about who the character is, it's about who the character is when they're in the armor," Shippey explained. "Because putting that armor on changes, I think how you see yourself, how you interact with the world. I can speak from experience from wearing it, that it does that to me. So I'm like, 'Okay, how would this character feel in this armor?' And so it goes even beyond that type of work."

"But all of these characters have incredible actors attached that were very generous with advice whenever I was in the suit that would kind of weigh in on those moments that were really important," he added. "So a lot of it was just listening to people who were really smart and talented."

Finally, we asked Shippey if there are any other game characters or creatures he'd like to play in potential future seasons of Fallout.

"A deathclaw," he suggested, referring to the game's genetically-engineered creatures. "I like the villainous creatures, like the antagonists ... Having a little bit more agility, I think that'd be really fun. I don't know how we pull that off practically, but [Jonathan Nolan] would figure it out."

Fallout is now streaming on Prime Video.

Fallout's Production Designer Talks Adapting Games and Westworld Differences https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallouts-production-designer-talks-adapting-games-and-westworld-differences/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 18:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 29326f59-89ff-434a-8e4e-b634c274fc09

The entire first season of Fallout was released on Prime Video this week, and it's already a hit with critics and audiences alike. The show is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% critics score and 85% audience score. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new series a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." ComicBook.com had the chance to attend the show's Los Angeles premiere earlier this week and spoke to many of the folks who brought the series to life. The cast had nothing but praise for the production design, and we spoke to the production designer, Howard Cummings, about the series and how it compared to his time working on Westworld, which had a lot of the same team behind the scenes.

"The showrunners were new, Graham [Wagner] and Geneva [Robertson-Dworet], and they're the originators of the story and all this stuff, but we all kind of fit right in," Cummings shared. "But yeah, there was a shorthand that helped, but it doesn't look anything like Westworld. It's kind of the opposite. And it's a comedy, so it's goofy. It's also violent. Well, Westworld was too, but I mean it is colorful. It's nothing like that. So I kept going, 'Am I supposed to make this thing look slicker?' And they said, 'You do what you want to.'"

"I fell in love with the game," he added. "I fell in love with looking at and understanding from the fans really from YouTube tutorials and stuff like that. And that's how I learned about the game. And I went, these people love this. And then I began to love it."

What Is Fallout About?

While the show's main characters - Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) - are entirely new, they fit certain archetypes established in the games. Lucy is a Vault Dweller, and the start of the series centers around her leaving her Vault for the very first time and heading to Los Angeles. Maximus is a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel, while Cooper is a bounty-hunting Ghoul.

"It's an uncertain time in television. So the art form of season finales has become: provide enough closure, but leave the door open for more," writer Graham Wagner told Total Film. "But we feel we've barely scratched the surface of the Fallout universe. We literally have documents and documents of stuff that we're, in success, eager to dig into. Our fingers are crossed that we're going to get the opportunity to do all that stuff."

Fallout is now streaming on Prime Video.

Will Ospreay's Creative Role Within AEW ALL IN: London Teased https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/will-ospreay-aew-all-in-london-creative-role-teased/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:34:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 8880cba9-afaa-4fb2-b089-b2ee9b0f84e1

All Elite Wrestling is heading back to the United Kingdom. Following the smash success of AEW ALL IN: London this past August, AEW announced that it would return to Wembley Stadium in Summer 2024. This show will mark a trilogy of ALL IN events, as the inaugural edition came back in September 2018, precursing the birth of AEW. After five years of dormancy, AEW President Tony Khan resurrected the historic name for AEW's overseas debut in an effort to capture the "bet on yourself" spirit that ALL IN (2018) had. AEW ALL IN: London went on to have the largest paid attendance for a wrestling show in history, selling 81,035 tickets.

Many of those who flocked to Wembley that day came to see Will Ospreay. AEW borrowed the Aerial Assassin from New Japan Pro Wrestling for AEW ALL IN: London, fulfilling a dream of Ospreay's by having him wrestle inside Wembley Stadium. While Ospreay was the outsider in 2023, he walks into the 2024 event as one of AEW's top flag-bearers.

Beyond likely having a prominent bout on the card, Ospreay is also helping put together 2024's AEW ALL IN: London as a whole.

"Yeah, we have," AEW President Tony Khan told ComicBook.com when asked if he and Ospreay have discussed Ospreay's creative ideas for AEW ALL IN: London. "I have talked to Will about it and I'm really excited. I think that this is going to be an amazing event and I'm really thrilled that we get to do this, that we're going to Wembley Stadium and Will Ospreay is under contract. He's going to be a part of it as a full-time member of the AEW roster this year. He's very excited about the event. I've been talking to him about it lot. I think it's going to be tremendous."

Ospreay's involvement as a full-time competitor is just one of a couple new luxuries that AEW ALL IN: London has this year. AEW also has had a full year to spread the word, begin ticket sales, and tease matches for the 2024 version.

"I think it's going to really pick up coming out of Double or Nothing, which is about three months before," Khan said in response to when the AEW ALL IN: London build will begin. "I think you'll see a lot of build through the summer from Double or Nothing to ALL IN, and of course you have Forbidden Door in the middle."

AEW ALL IN: London goes down on Sunday, August 25th.

Civil War: Kirsten Dunst Talks Working with Alex Garland https://comicbook.com/movies/news/civil-war-kirsten-dunst-talks-working-with-alex-garland/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:06:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 8e9a6d37-b9cb-42f3-b541-169dee4efe34

Kirsten Dunst has worked with many great directors over the years ranging from Sam Raimi and Lars Von Trier to Sofia Coppola and Jane Campion. This weekend, you can catch Dunst on the big screen in Civil War, the new film from Ex Machina and Annihilation director, Alex Garland. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Dunst about the project, and we asked how Garland compares to some of the other great directors she's worked with throughout her career.

"I've been a fan of his since I saw Ex Machina, and then have read screenplays of his, so I didn't think that it was a possibility I would be able to work with him, so that was really exciting," Dunst shared. "I was so stoked to get this role. I really thought, 'Wow, he's doing something I've never seen before,' and I want to be a part of things like that. So I always migrate to the people that are pushing boundaries or I hope to work with them, the people that are doing things that no one else thinks to do, or I migrate to those kinds of filmmakers."

Kirsten Dunst leads Civil War's cast along with Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Jesse Plemons.

Is Alex Garland Retiring?

Garland recently expressed that he would be stepping away from directing, and while some of those comments were interpreted to mean he would no longer be making movies, he has since clarified his comments. The director explained that he is specifically taking an indefinite hiatus from directing to focus on writing. However, he has no plans to retire.

"What I said is I'm going to take a break from directing for the foreseeable future. How that could get extrapolated as what pride I do or do not feel in this movie. I just don't see the connecting thread," Garland confirmed to IndieWire. "I said I'm going to stop directing for the foreseeable future. Why would a statement like that be taken and picked over or interpreted to that degree? There's something weird happening there. There's something strange about that ... it's a general strangeness that exists to do with what form public statements take, how they are used, and how words are interpreted or read."

Civil War is set to hit theaters on April 12th.

Cailee Spaeny Reveals If Kirsten Dunst Gave Her Franchise Advice Ahead of Alien: Romulus https://comicbook.com/movies/news/cailee-spaeny-reveals-if-kirsten-dunst-gave-her-franchise-advice-ahead-of-alien-romulus/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7a856bac-9260-4b1b-9d85-b267267a9f2f

Civil War is heading to theaters this weekend, and it stars Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Jesse Plemons. The movie was helmed by Alex Garland and is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% critics score. ComicBook.com's Kofi Outlaw gave the movie a 4 out of 5 stars, calling it Garland's "most ambitious film yet." In honor of the film's upcoming release, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with its stars about the intense subject matter. In the film, Dunst plays a renowned photojournalist, and Spaeny's character wants to follow in her footsteps. The mentor/mentee relationship they have onscreen is similar to the relationship they share in real life.

Dunst has been thriving in Hollywood for 30 years, and she's no stranger to franchises, having played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Spaeny is about to join another long-running franchise thanks to the upcoming film, Alien: Romulus. While chatting with Dunst and Spaeny about Civil War, we asked Spaeny if she had gotten any advice from Dunst about joining a franchise.

"We didn't talk about that," Dunst revealed. "No, I hadn't booked it when we working together," Spaeny added.

"I was in Priscilla phase with Cailee," Dunst explains. Of course, Dunst has a long history with Priscilla's director, Sofia Coppola. "I love how [Cailee] explains it. I love when you're like, 'It's going to be the opposite of this movie.' You're going to look beautiful and you're going to be sad in the bathtub. That's what Cailee always says, and I'm like, 'Yeah.'" Dunst added with a laugh.

"It was the best thing to go to after Civil War. I just sort of ran around in nice dresses and my hair all nice," Spaeny explained.

You can watch our interview with Dunst and Spaeny at the top of the page.

What Is Alien: Romulus About?

With prequels like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant leaning more into the artificial intelligence angle of the franchise, this new film looks to be embracing the abject horror of the franchise's iconic monsters. The movie hits theaters on August 16th.

The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Civil War is set to hit theaters on April 12th.

Fallout Creators Reveal Most Important Thing About Adapting the Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-creators-reveal-most-important-thing-about-adapting-the-game/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 17:54:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e8de0e20-25d4-4217-8f40-72e9fe899182

All eight episodes of Fallout dropped on Prime Video last night, and both critics and fans are enjoying the video game adaptation. At the time of the writing, the new series is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score and 84% audience score. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new series a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with some of the folks who brought Fallout to life, including director/executive producer, Jonathan Nolan, and Bethesda's Todd Howard, who not only led the development of the Fallout games but also served as an executive producer on the new show. We asked the creatives what was most important to them when it came to adapting Fallout, and they gave the same answer.

"The tone," Nolan said when asked what was most important to him as a fan of the games. "The tone is so unusual, so unique. I'd never experienced anything that dark and weird and gonzo and funny and satirical and violent. All the good flavors."

"Well, for me, the key moments were first, the tone," Howard shared. "It's really all about the tone. I could check off: It's got to have the vaults, it's got to have this, it's got to have power. It's really about the tone. It's the most unique thing about Fallout, where it's going to be a serious dramatic western, it's going to be an epic action movie through many landscapes, and it's going to be a dark comedy at times. And weaving those together, I think really is the hardest thing. And one of the things that [Jonathan] and [showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner] who wrote it and worked on it so much, really, really did a great job."

Sugar Star Amy Ryan Reveals What Drew Her to the Apple TV+ Series https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/amy-ryan-sugar-apple-tv-plus/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 14:32:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 2cacd41f-138b-42d5-a620-7bca0b886d54

Amy Ryan has revealed what she's enjoyed the most about starring in the new Apple TV+ series Sugar. Ryan is a veteran of comedies and dramas, with her resume including stints on The Office and The Wire. Her latest acting role puts Ryan opposite Colin Farrell in Sugar, which takes a contemporary look at the world of private investigation. Farrell plays John Sugar, a private investigator hired to look into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. There's a lot to like about Sugar, from its tone to the backdrop of old Hollywood. Classic movies are just one of the aspects of Sugar that appealed to Ryan.

ComicBook.com spoke to Amy Ryan about Sugar, where she was asked about how the Apple TV+ series splices in images from classic movies. When asked what classic movies would have influenced her character, Melanie, she laughed, "That's probably a question I should have asked myself when I was working on this character."

Ryan added, "I think that's one of the most exciting parts of the series, how it borrows from these iconic films. They are also major parts of the character. It's Colin's thought process that he refers to human beings from characters he knows backward and forwards from these films. I think that's just a beautiful element of the show, which I've never seen before." You can watch the interview in the video player above.

What is Colin Farrell's Sugar series about?

The description of Sugar reads, "Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried."

The series also stars Kirby (The Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), James Cromwell (Succession), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don't Worry Darling), and Alex Hernandez (Invasion).

Sugar is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg's overall deal following Invasion. Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Two Popes), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (The Offer).

Sugar premieres globally on Friday, April 5 with two episodes, followed by one episode every Friday through May 17 on Apple TV+.

Fallout Stars Reveal What They're Most Excited For Fans To See https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-stars-reveal-what-theyre-most-excited-for-fans-to-see/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 00:09:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 707f662d-7f13-4fe4-a2b5-f3971b3bdc20

The time has finally come! Fallout fans are less than an hour away from seeing the new series drop on Prime Video. The show is already getting praise from critics, and it is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% critics score. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new series a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with some of the show's cast at the Los Angeles premiere, and they revealed what they're most excited for fans to see.

"I think I'm most excited for them to see the way the show is shot," Johnny Pemberton (Thaddeus) shared. "That is a nod to a certain aspect of the game, like the gameplay. So it's cool. If you don't know, it's still cool ... But it's like that aspect of it, it lends itself to being really interesting just for filmmaking purposes, but it's also for people who play the games."

"The production design," Cameron Cowperthwaite (Monty) replied. "[Jonathan] Nolan and his team and everybody built everything. You could touch it. So as an actor ... I've stepped into some stuff where you do the green screen thing, but this was real. So I think that is something that we really appreciate in cinema sometimes without fully knowing. It is like, 'Oh my God, that location exists. I can be there. I can see myself there.' So I think everybody's going to appreciate the level of effort and detail that went into that, especially for a world that's retro."

"I think what I'm most excited for is for them to see all the hard work that everyone wanted to bring that massive world to the screen," Rodrigo Luzzi (Reg) explained. "I mean, it's epic. It's cinematic. It sticks to the source materials, and then it also makes it approachable for people who haven't invested all that time. And I think everyone's going to be really surprised because a lot of times you're like, 'How are they going to do this? How are they going to bring this to the screen?'"

"I think it's just a case of, there's been a lot of talk about Fallout 5, but I think this a new world that the fans get introduced to," Xelia Mendes-Jone (Dane) added. "It's part of the Fallout universe, it's canon and it's original, so if you want more Fallout content, here it is. And it's funny and it's bloody and it's gory and it's action-packed and it's got it all."

"I mean, it's hard to pick any one thing," Chris Parnell (Overseer Benjamin) shared. The production value is extraordinary. Cinematography. It's such a huge world they created, so I think people who are already a fan of the game - most of those people don't know it at all - It's massive."

Stay tuned for more from our Fallout interviews, including our chat with the man all of the actors can't stop prising: production designer, Howard Cummings.

Fallout premieres on Prime Video tonight at 6 PM PT.

A League of Their Own Star Addresses Show's "Devastating" Cancellation https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/a-league-of-their-own-dale-dickey-addresses-shows-devastating-cancellation/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 22:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f977d7d8-3296-43b5-9e75-6791a204f6d7

Amazon is releasing its newest show, Fallout, on Prime Video tonight. The highly-anticipated show is an adaptation of the popular game series of the same name, and it is getting early praise from critics. The show is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score. However, some TV fans are nervous about investing in a new show considering how many have been getting cancelled. One series that won't live to see a second season is A League of Their Own, a fresh take on the classic film of the same name. The baseball series was also a hit with critics, earning a 95% critics score in addition to an 87% audience score. Initially, Amazon opted to bring the show back for four more episodes but then decided to scrap it altogether. At the Los Angeles premiere of Fallout, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Dale Dickey, who appears in Fallout as Ma June. She also played Beverly in A League of Their Own, so we asked her feelings about the show's unfortunate cancellation.

"It can be devastating," Dickey shared. "I think particularly for the creators and the League girls. 12 of them, you know, and I was their chaperone, but it's hard ... I was on a brand new show that was really great. We got shut down when Covid hit. I was on another brand new show that was really great, and we got shut down during the strike."

"Then you have things like A League of Your Own, they were going to do at least four episodes ... But what happens with Maxine [Chant? Adams]?" Dickey wondered with a sigh. "It was such a good show. That was heartbreaking for everybody else ... I've been around a long time, and I've been able to work, but these young kids ... And it's an important series."

"I love that they slowly built the warmth of her," she added of her character. "It was hard to be mean to those girls. But my mom grew up in that period. She didn't play ball, by my grandmother was a WAC in the Army, the Women's Army Corps."

Fallout: Ella Purnell and More Share Details About Their Vault Dweller Costumes https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-ella-purnell-and-more-share-details-about-their-vault-dweller-costumes/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 21:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 42498fb7-5f84-4396-9bda-43fbaa68082e

Fallout is debuting on Amazon's Prime Video tonight with all eight episodes of the new series dropping at the same time. The new show is adapted from the game series of the same name, and it is already getting praise from critics. The series is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score with ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon giving it a 4.5 out of 5. Last night, ComicBook.com attended the Los Angeles premiere of the show and had the chance to chat with multiple members of the cast. We asked Ella Purnell (Lucy) if she found the Vault Dweller costume freeing, or if she got sick of wearing the same thing in every episode.

"I found it freeing until I realized how hard it was to pee in that day," Purnell shared with a laugh. "Because you got to take off the arm gauntlets, either pip-boy, thermal in your armor, put it down, you're butt naked in the porta potty. It's not as glamorous as it looks."

We asked more Vault Dwellers about their costumes, and they shared their own thoughts on wearing the same outfit throughout the season.

"You know what? It was a little comforting, because you didn't think about that," Rodrigo Luzzi (Reg) explained of his costume. "You didn't have to worry about it. So you put it on once and then you're like, 'All right, this is what I'm going to be living in.' You got used to it. It was really comfortable."

"So I'm pregnant [in the show], and when I become not pregnant, I missed the bump," Annabel O'Hagan (Stephanie) shared. "To have a physical attribute of myself that just created the opportunities for this character to sort of grow - the suits are so comfortable ... They look amazing." She also called out customer designer Amy Westcott, adding, "They outdid themselves with all of the costumes."

Fallout: Bethesda's Todd Howard Confirms Show's Place in the Timeline, Teases Fallout 5 https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-bethesda-todd-howard-confirms-shows-place-timeline-teases-fallout-5-interview/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 20:04:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 714ccda6-0a38-4fa3-9620-408180c1eef8

Amazon's Fallout TV show is finally dropping on Prime Video this week. In fact, it was just announced that the streaming site would be releasing all eight episodes early. The show is already getting praise from critics, and it is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score. ComicBook.com's Tanner Dedmon gave the new series a 4.5 out of 5, saying it has "raised the bar for what a video game adaptation can look like." Previously, the show's showrunners revealed they perceive the show a "Fallout 5," so we asked Bethesda's Todd Howard what that means for the future of the games.

"Oh no, the show is not Fallout 5," Howard confirmed to ComicBook.com at the show's Los Angeles premiere. "But we approached it in the way we do a game. What would another next story be? We move the timeline forward and Fallout forward. We pick a location that's unique. We have all new characters, so we approached it the same way, but clearly, no, it's not Fallout 5. There will eventually be," he teased of the video game franchise's future.

In addition to leading the development of the Fallout games for Bethesda, Howard is also an executive producer on the new show. Early reviews for Fallout suggest the series will appease both fans of the games and newcomers, so we also asked Howard how they found that balance.

"I think we don't find that balance for you," Howard revealed. "We just say like we do every game. We assume you've never played a game. Even when we do Fallout 4, we've assumed you haven't played. So this was the same thing. We assume you've never played, you don't know Fallout, and we just get right to it. The world itself is so cool. We just dive in. And I would say for fans, we're fans, right? So for ourselves, making it really, really authentic to that universe. As long as we do that and we do a good enough job of that, I think fans will really dig up."

Tony Khan Details Creative Process Behind Adam Copeland's Notable AEW Dynamite Promo (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/tony-khan-creative-process-adam-copeland-aew-dynamite-promo-cm-punk-exclusive/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 17:32:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 24108c4e-efb2-432a-a7af-d35d622394f1

Adam Copeland is one of AEW's flag-bearers. The Rated-R Superstar made the leap to All Elite Wrestling this past fall at AEW WrestleDream, setting his sights on former tag partner Christian Cage. The two would feud for the next six months, culminating in an AEW TNT Title match in both men's hometown of Toronto. Copeland emerged victorious, kicking off his first true title reign in over a decade. Since then, Copeland has had one successful defense against former protege Matt Cardona. While that match received praise from fans and critics alike, it has been Copeland's words that have garnered the most attention.

Earlier this month on AEW Dynamite, Copeland kicked off the program by praising his employer, reminding fans of the wrestling revolution that AEW started back in 2019. Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan emphasized that the promo was Copeland's concept.

"We talked on the phone that week and I had mentioned I'd love to feature him," Khan said. "He said, 'I'd love to do a promo on this show.' He came to me during the week before the show, a few days before the show and said that he had some things he wanted to say. He mentioned what he was thinking and I thought it was a great idea. I was really honored that he feels that way about AEW and that he's so happy here. Given Adam Copeland's stature in wrestling and his experience, I thought that it was a great idea."

Copeland's words were seen as a rebuttal to comments former AEW star CM Punk made about his past employer two days prior. In an extended interview, Punk provided his side of numerous controversial incidents he was involved in during his two years in AEW, including a backstage altercation that resulted in him getting fired with cause.

"I feel that we're very fortunate to have Adam Copeland in AEW. The things that he said were very powerful and meant a lot to me personally and professionally," Khan continued. "He's a great TNT Champion for AEW, and I think Adam Copeland would be a great champion and a great face to represent any wrestling company. I'm so glad that he's in AEW and I really appreciated what he said."

AEW Dynamite returns to television tonight at 8 PM ET.

Tony Khan Says Backstage AEW ALL IN: London Footage Will Be "Relevant" (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/tony-khan-backstage-aew-all-in-london-footage-relevant-cm-punk-exclusive/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 14:12:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 80e4406b-2559-4906-bfde-262d3bcab0e0

The Young Bucks are set to clear the air once and for all. This past August at AEW ALL IN: London, former AEW star CM Punk got into a physical altercation with Jack Perry moments before his scheduled match against Samoa Joe. Punk and Perry's brawl reportedly spilled towards the production area where AEW President Tony Khan was caught in the middle. Khan would go on to describe the incident as one that made him feel as though his "life was in danger." Punk was subsequently fired from AEW, with cause, in the week that followed AEW ALL IN: London.

While past backstage fights are recounted through he said, she said, the AEW ALL IN: London incident was caught on film. Security cameras from within Wembley Stadium reportedly picked up the full incident, and AEW has kept that footage internal for the past eight months.

That changes on tonight's AEW Dynamite.

This past weekend, AEW announced that The Young Bucks will "present backstage footage from AEW ALL IN: London" on the broadcast. It has since been emphasized that this is not a bait and switch, as the footage in question will be related to the CM Punk and Jack Perry altercation.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan explained that the footage in question is "relevant" to current AEW storylines.

"I think it's important that The Young Bucks explain why this footage is relevant. We're coming up on AEW Dynasty on April 21st. It's official that it will be FTR versus The Young Bucks in the finals of the World Tag Team Championship tournament," Khan explained. "The last time these teams met in the ring was a world tag team championship match on AEW's biggest show ever, and in many ways the biggest show ever in pro wrestling, the most tickets sold to any event ever in wrestling. It will be relevant and I'll leave it to the Young Bucks to explain the relevance to the story and AEW Dynasty."

AEW Dynamite goes down tonight at 8 PM ET on TBS.

Chucky: Devon Sawa Reflects on Becoming Don Mancini's Muse, "I Let Him Think About How He's Going To Kill Me" https://comicbook.com/horror/news/chucky-devon-sawa-reflects-on-becoming-don-mancinis-muse/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 01:35:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 97af87fa-8d23-4047-bafc-adc06031b77b

Since he joined Chucky in its first season, fan-favorite actor Devon Sawa went from a newcomer to a franchise veteran. Having now played four different characters in Chucky's three seasons (five if you count when he was Chucky himself for about four seconds), Sawa has become a full part of the Chucky family, and something like a muse for creator Don Mancini. Speaking with ComicBook.com for the upcoming second half of Chucky season 3, we asked Devon Sawa if he knew way back in season 1 that he would achieve this status in the series, allowing him the chance to open up about how it really happened.

"I'm glad I didn't just because season one, I mean, it would've changed a lot," Sawa revealed. "Season one, I got the audition. I knew it was these two brothers and they're dying and that's it. I knew I was dying in episode one and I knew I was dying in episode seven, and so you're just at peace with it. You're like, okay, so I'm in these episodes, I die here. I'm going to have fun with this season. I'm going to go up to Toronto. I'm going to kick ass, and that's it, and I'll go find something after that. And so when he approached me after I died and said, Hey, would you like to come back next year? It was flattering and awesome. Now it's a little different. Now it's on the end of season two. It was like, oh, well, I'm probably coming back. it's been a treat. It's been a treat that he does this."

Since he's been on the series, Devon Sawa has been killed off in spectacular ways. The very first episode of Chucky that he appeared in saw him electrocuted by Chucky, with the killer doll using his own vomit as a conduit for the shock, with his second character in season 1 beaten to death by his son using, what else, the Chucky doll. Season 2 saw Devon Sawa's character literally explode, and with four episodes remaining Chucky season 3 who's to say what fate awaits him. Sawa confirmed that he's never gone to Mancini and pitched a death though, allowing the Chucky creator that privilege all on his own.

"Don gets so much joy out of coming up with these deaths," Sawa said. "I remember him, he had a random idea. There was a different idea for season three before it became the White House, and I remember him running up to me with this idea of how I was going to die in it. He's like, I came up with a really good idea of how you die in season three. And he told me, and he looked legitimately very excited about this death and how he was going to kill me. So I give him that joy. I don't suggest anything. I let him think about how he's going to kill me."

Chucky season 3 airs Wednesdays at 9 PM ET on both SYFY and USA Network with the series returning on Wednesday, April 10.

Where is Chucky streaming?

The first two seasons of Chucky are available for streaming on two different platforms, both Peacock and Shudder. All sixteen episodes of the series, including both seasons 1 and 2, can be streamed on each of these services. Unlike previous seasons of Chucky however, wherein the entire season would have to premiere on cable before it began streaming, the new episodes of Chucky season 3 will be available for streaming the next day. After Chucky season 3's episodes air on SYFY and USA Network on Wednesdays, they'll be available to stream the very next day on Peacock.

Johnny Knoxville Wants a WrestleMania Rematch Against Sami Zayn https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/johnny-knoxville-wrestlemania-rematch-sami-zayn/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 19:28:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 65f9043c-4207-40b6-998c-51b0cb3f9578

Johnny Knoxville is open to having a rematch with his WrestleMania opponent Sami Zayn. The Jackass headliner and WWE Superstar had a spirited matchup at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, with the bout having the "Anything Goes" stipulation. Sami Zayn was a heel, aka bad guy, at the time, with Knoxville playing the fan-favorite. It's a stark difference from WrestleMania 40, where Sami Zayn heroically defeated Gunther to end his reign as Intercontinental Champion. Johnny Knoxville joins a long list of celebrities to compete at WrestleMania, with some making multiple appearances. Could we see another rematch between Knoxville and Zayn at the Showcase of the Immortals?

ComicBook.com spoke to Johnny Knoxville ahead of the premiere of his new movie Sweet Dreams. When asked if he felt any FOMO after seeing Sami Zayn when the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania this weekend, Knoxville responded, "I don't really care to talk about that lowdown and dirty Sami Zayn too much. I did love smashing him in his big, stupid face at WrestleMania, and I hope, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, I get to one day do that again."

He added, "I know he's a good guy now, but I don't think he's a great guy." You can see a clip of the interview in the player above.

What is Johnny Knoxville's Sweet Dreams about?

The description of Sweet Dreams reads, "Johnny Knoxville, Mo Amer, Theo Von and Kate Upton unite in this wild and off-the-wall journey of second chances from the producer of The Peanut Butter Falcon. Forced into rehab at SWEET DREAMS recovery center, Morris (Knoxville) struggles to confront the wreckage of his life. But when their house goes up for auction, he reluctantly agrees to coach their misfit softball team of recovering addicts to win a cash prize and prove that everyone, despite their past, can hit a home run."

New WWE intro revealed at WrestleMania 40

WWE officially kicked off WrestleMania 40 by unveiling a new video introduction. WWE programming has been using the "Then. Now. Forever. Together" slogan to welcome viewers to live television events and premium live events (PLE), with footage spliced featuring superstars throughout WWE history. Icons such as Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Undertaker, John Cena and more have been included on these WWE intros, and with this year's WrestleMania marking the 40th event, it looks like it's time for another new take on the intro. It's only 30 seconds long, but it uses its time wisely and helps set the stage for WrestleMania XL.

"THEN. NOW. FOREVER. TOGETHER.," Triple H's voice can be heard narrating. The "THEN" portion includes Andre the Giant, Macho Man Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bret the Hitman Hart, and Shawn Michaels. "NOW" opens with current WWE Superstars Rhea Rhipley, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Bianca Belair, The New Day, The Miz, Drew McIntyre, and Cody Rhodes. Finally, "FOREVER" features Ultimate Warrior, Sgt. Slaughter, Eddie Guerrero, Undertaker, Bruno Sammartino, Lita, Trish Stratus, Triple H, Charlotte Flair, Bray Wyatt, The Rock, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Roman Reigns.

Sweet Dreams is playing in theaters on April 12th.

Did WWE Inquire to AEW About Borrowing Jon Moxley For a Complete Shield Reunion at WrestleMania 40? (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwe-inquire-aew-borrowing-jon-moxley-the-shield-reunion-wrestlemania-40-exclusive/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 19:09:00 +0000 Liam Crowley d7595119-3b8c-4dc3-b443-f4c68fdac6e8

Stars of WWE's past, present and future ran through Philadelphia to help Cody Rhodes finish his story at WWE WrestleMania 40. Jey Uso took out his brother Jimmy. John Cena eliminated Solo Sikoa. The Undertaker squashed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. While those aforementioned names evened the odds against Reigns's stablemates, it was Seth Rollins who played one final mind game to distract Reigns himself.

"SIERRA, HOTEL, INDIA, ECHO, LIMA, DELTA" echoed throughout Lincoln Financial Field as fans in attendance looked throughout the stadium for The Shield. In the end it was just Rollins, donning his Shield gear and wielding a chair, that emerged from the crowd to play one last mind game on Reigns.

Noticeable by his absence was Dean Ambrose. From 2012 until 2014, Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns ran roughshod on WWE as The Shield, a trio of ruthless rookies bent on making a name for themselves on WWE's main roster. After Rollins broke up the faction ten years ago, all three members of The Shield would become bonafide main-venters in their own right, reuniting on a couple of occasions. Their last reunion came in 2019 as Ambrose departed WWE after his contract expired. He has competed for AEW as Jon Moxley ever since.

Did WWE Inquire About Using Jon Moxley at WrestleMania 40?

There was never a chance of a full Shield reunion at WWE WrestleMania 40.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan confirmed that WWE did not reach out to AEW about using Jon Moxley for a one-off appearance during the Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns main event.

While the two companies exist in their own exclusive ways, there have been times that AEW and WWE have come together to do business. Billy Gunn was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of D-Generation X in 2019 while he was on an AEW contract. AEW stars Bryan Danielson, Chris Jericho, and Paul Wight all sent pre-recorded videos to WWE Monday Night Raw to celebrate John Cena's wrestling anniversary in 2022.

"I don't think The Shield will ever be recreated or brought back," Roman Reigns said in a 2020 interview. "We were so good and honestly I think we did the reunion thing a few years ago a little too much. We're one of the only factions who came into it as no-namers and then walked out and had our final group hug as world champions."

Civil War Stars Address Movie's Intense Subject Matter https://comicbook.com/movies/news/civil-war-stars-address-movies-intense-subject-matter/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 13:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2f41e1a5-3458-42f7-88b9-280445286d87

Alex Garland, the director known for helming movies such as Ex Machina and Annihilation, is back with a new film. Civil War hits theaters this month, and it follows war journalists as they travel through the United States amidst an ongoing war. The film is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% critics score after 40 reviews, and some are calling it a "tough and unsettling" watch. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with the film's stars, and they spoke about what it was like to make such a harrowing movie.

"I was just talking about this, the tension in films like that, when I did Narcos, we were dealing with a lot of heavy scenes and all that," Wagner Moura explained. "It's not in your mind, it's not an intellectual thing. Your mind is free when you rap. Right? I'm going to go somewhere, I'm going to smoke a cigarette, have a drink, but the body, it sort of stays there, right? So I don't know how to shake it off, actually. And those keeping up with life, seeing people that you love and maybe love. Love is the answer, though."

We asked Cailee Spaeny if she studied any real-life war journalists, and she spoke about some of her inspirations.

"I read a lot about three in particular," Spaeny explained. "Don McCullin, Lee Miller, who my character looks up to, and who I think about all the time now. And Lynsey Addario, who is working today, and then Alex himself grew up with journalists. His dad was a political cartoonist, and so he had so many personal stories and mentors that were from the journalism world and has such a love for them, and so I think that's really injected into this story."

You can watch our interview with Moura, Spaeny, and Kirsten Dunst at the top of the page.

Star Trek Discovery's Doug Jones Reveals How He Said Goodbye to Saru (And It Involves Whitney Houston) https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-discoverys-doug-jones-reveals-how-he-said-goodbye-to-saru-and-it-involves-whitney-houston/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 16:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 9e559438-655e-4d81-8ecf-2895dd778a7f

Star Trek: Discovery's long-awaited fifth season finally debuted this week on Paramount+, and it marks the beginning of the end for the series. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with some of the show's cast, and they opened up about saying goodbye to their characters in the final season. Doug Jones (Saru) revealed how he said farewell to the character he began playing in 2017, and it involves an iconic song...

"Oh yeah," Jones said when asked if he was able to keep any part of Saru after the show finished filming. "I wasn't gonna let that go. Yeah. My final time taking Saru off, I did not cut him up and throw him across the room at all," he added, referencing the famous story of Ren? Auberjonois throwing his Odo mask at the showrunner at the end of Deep Space Nine. "I held him on my hand and we were playing a Whitney Houston song and I sang 'I Will Always Love You' to him and somebody was recording it. So I hope that's out there somewhere."

What Is The Final Season of Star Trek: Discovery About?

Star Trek: Discovery premiered on Thursday, April 4th on Paramount+. The first two episodes of the show's final 10-episode season were released at the same time, and will be followed by weekly episode drops on Thursdays. You can read a description of the season below:

"The fifth and final season will find Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well... dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."

In addition to Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham, the Season 5 cast includes Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland "Book" Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (L'ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).

Martin-Green recently teased that, "There's a big thing. A biiiig thing in Season 5." She added that there will be "a great sense of adventure and fun. It's a bit of a tonal shift that I think people will enjoy."

"I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Star Trek: Discovery is ending," Martin-Green said in a statement released when Paramount+ confirmed Star Trek: Discovery would end with its fifth season. "I'm astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team. To our most supportive partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+, who insisted on making television history, I'm deeply grateful."

Stay tuned for more updates about Star Trek: Discovery.

Fallout: Jonathan Nolan Reveals Why He Keeps Blending Westerns and Sci-Fi https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-jonathan-nolan-reveals-why-he-keeps-blending-westerns-sci-fi-westworld/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 02:10:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 80969272-01cf-4e62-ab77-22a59db3d7e4

Amazon's Fallout TV show is finally dropping on Prime Video next week, and it marks the latest series to be executive produced by Jonathan Nolan, who is best known for Westworld. While the stories and source material for Westworld and Fallout are quite different, they do have one big thing in common: they are both sci-fi shows with extreme western influences. ComicBook.com recently spoke with Nolan about Fallout, and he revealed why he keeps blending the two genres.

"I don't know, I can't escape it," Nolan shared with a smile. "I grew up in a household where Sergio Leone movies were in constant rotation. With Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] and Graham [Wagner], we talked endlessly about The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on this project. Lisa [Joy] and I had talked endlessly about Once Upon a Time in the West on Westworld. I think it's so fascinating to me how film and television converge on a genre, and kind of strip-mines it until there's almost nothing left, and then sets it aside. That's what happened with the western in the '40s and '50s when virtually all movies were westerns."

"And we just lived through a 20-year period in which virtually all movies were comic book movies or all of the biggest movies in any given year. It's as if we're kind of exploring a genre from the inside out, and trying to figure out all the different story ideas that can come out of it, and then you set it aside for a while, and you come back to it 20 years later. I was saying just the other day, I can't wait to see the comic movies of the 2050s, because that's when you'll get a Sergio Leone-like figure [who] will come in and pick up what's left of that genre and invert the pieces and find something new. So I think the way that film and television can play with genre is endlessly fun to me."

You can watch our interview with Nolan at the top of the page.

What Is Fallout About?

While the show's main characters - Lucy (Purnell), Maximus (Moten), and Cooper Howard (Goggins) - are entirely new, they fit certain archetypes established in the games. Lucy is a Vault Dweller, and the start of the series centers around her leaving her Vault for the very first time and heading to Los Angeles. Maximus is a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel, while Cooper is a bounty-hunting Ghoul. All three get a significant amount of screen time in today's trailer, and it should give fans a better idea of the overall narrative.

Fallout premieres on Amazon Prime Video on April 11th.

The First Omen: Nell Tiger Free and Arkasha Stevenson Break Down Most Shocking Moments https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-nell-tiger-free-arkasha-stevenson-break-down-shocking-moments-hand-gore/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 01:15:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4f02a371-5bb3-4106-9068-7bb7bde572b9

The First Omen is offiically playing in theaters, and the new horror film takes place before the events of The Omen (1976). The movie was directed by Arkasha Stevenson (Brand New Cherry Flavor) and stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant) as Margaret, a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with both Stevenson and Free, and they both spoke about their love for the original film. We also brought up some of the movie's goriest moments, and they talked about how things went down behind the scenes. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! One of the freakiest moments in the movie is when Margaret watches a woman give birth, and a gruesome hand comes out instead of a baby.

"That was fully practical," Stevenson revealed. "That was a piece by Adrien Morot and Kathy [Tse], and that's Kathy's hand, our makeup effects artist coming out. She has this beautiful, delicate hand to press through, and what I love about their work is how detailed it is. And if you look closely, you can see little bits of cellulite and skin and hair pores. And so you look at the image and a lot of their work, you'd walk on set and you'd be like, 'Oh, that man has no legs. Oh, that's a piece.' You start losing your grip on reality with them."

ComicBook.com recently moderated a Q&A with Stevenson and her co-writer, Tim Smith, and they revealed they encountered some trouble with that scene with it came to the MPAA. They almost got an NC-17 rating, and the scene ultimately had to be cut down from 30 seconds to 13 seconds to three seconds.

As for Free, the lead of the movie enjoyed getting gory for the film, and spoke about having to hold the torso of a severed body.

"So when I'm holding that, the top half of him, that was an interesting moment for sure," Fere shared. "Also, I guess in the finale, in the last kind of moments, I am covered in blood, and I was covered in blood for four days shooting that, cause it took a long time. But also we were on sand and I was lying on sand, so I had sand and blood and mud and just, I was in tatters. I really wasn't. They added sweat to me. So everything sticks to you. And then there's fire. So there's real sweat in the mix. I stunk."

You can wtach our interviews with Stevenson and Free at the top of the page. The First Omen is now playing in theaters.

WWE's AJ Styles Talks TNA History with LA Knight and Reveals If He Ever Considered AEW Run https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwes-aj-styles-talks-tna-history-with-la-knight-and-reveals-if-he-ever-considered-aew-run/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 00:07:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar bd73bdd7-6e63-413f-b1a3-47318edbd5d4

WrestleMania is the perfect place to settle some scores, and one of the more bitter rivalries in WWE at the moment is the one between AJ Styles and LA Knight. Things have only gotten more chaotic from there, including a full-on brawl at WrestleMania's media day. While they are at odds at the moment, there are some similarities in their journey to WWE, as both stars came into their own during their time in TNA. ComicBook.com's Liam Crowley had the chance to speak with Styles ahead of WrestleMania 40, where Styles discussed his run in TNA, seeing flashes of the LA Knight we see now in WWE, and whether or not Styles ever considered a run in AEW.

When asked what he gained from his time in TNA and how TNA helped Knight become the megastar he is today, Styles said, "Well, I think that you gain experience, experience is everything. And I worked with a lot of unbelievably, unbelievably good wrestlers in TNA, and LA Knight kind of had that same path to a degree. You could see a little bit of L.A. Knight in TNA, the same L.A. Knight that you know, with the stuff he's doing, and it was only a matter of time. As soon as he gets the opportunity to be the LA Knight that he is today, he's going to be a megastar as he calls it."

Styles has become a fixture of WWE since his surprise debut in the 2016 Royal Rumble, but at one point there was a rumor going around that fans might see a Styles and Good Brothers reunion on AEW Dynamite. Those rumors indicated Styles and the Good Brothers would take on The Elite, and Styles was asked if that idea ever made it his way.

"Never. I was definitely happy being here and still am in WWE," Styles said. "That's kind of where I belong and this is where I'm going to be." Now Styles will take on LA Knight on WWE's grandest stage, and you can find the full card for WrestleMania 40 below.

Fallout: Kyle MacLachlan Reveals How '50s Aesthetic Influenced His Role https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/fallout-kyle-maclachlan-reveals-how-50s-aesthetic-influenced-his-role/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 21:15:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 642e019d-34a7-4928-bc6d-abecaa845547

Amazon's Fallout TV show is finally dropping on Prime Video next week, and gaming fans are eager to see how the adaptation unfolds. The show features an exciting line-up of actors, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), Aaron Moten (Disjointed), Walton Goggins (Justified), Kyle MacLachlan (Dune), and more. The Fallout show is not a retelling of any specific game in the series, but rather a continuation of the story that the showrunners perceive as a "Fallout 5." In the show, MacLachlan plays a Vault Dweller named Hank and recently told ComicBook.com how the 1950s aesthetic influenced his role.

"Well, you know, there's a certain quality and tone that we were after," MacLachlan explained. "You could sort of say in general terms, that fifties sensibility, that post-war, that a positive can-do [attitude]. 'We can do anything. Look, we're on the upswing.' All those kinds of attitudes and that tone infected Hank, of course, and that's a big part of who his character is."

"So the tone of it really does influence the character," he added. "I mean, it's also who the character is and the values that he has going forward. But it was supported by what was around ... He just was very proud of the way that Vault was performing and the way he looked, and that people took pride in their work. You know, they were there doing good things and good deeds. I guess that's the impact it had, I think."

While the show's main characters - Lucy (Purnell), Maximus (Moten), and Cooper Howard (Goggins) - are entirely new, they fit certain archetypes established in the games. The First Omen Producer Keith Levine Talks Honoring Original Film https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-producer-keith-levine-talks-honoring-original-film/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 01:08:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a36d1f7e-facc-4025-8c35-f67efc62f33f

The First Omen opens in theaters tonight, and the film takes place before the events of The Omen, which was released back in 1976. The new film stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant, Game of Thrones) as a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church when she encounters a dark conspiracy. ComicBook.com recently spoke with producer Keith Levine, who opened up about honoring the original film.

"It's making sure that we are honoring that essence, that what made the original great, is not absent from what we're doing," Levine explained. "Whenever we work within a piece of IP or a franchise or something that has a preexisting fan base, for the most part, we always talk about what are the core tenants of what makes this great. Why do people come to this in the first place? And we kind of distill it down and make sure those things are first and foremost present in what we're doing, which sounds like a no-brainer, but sometimes these brands or these projects or these franchises get passed to people who want to do away with that stuff and want to start afresh."

"But I think especially for fans, and especially for Omen fans and for people who've had fandom for 50 years, I think they want to be welcomed in and they want to have people, I think, shepherding the process who kind of feel the same way they do," he added. "And so that's who we are. We have an affinity for it as well. So the same way I think that fans want to see certain ideas, we just make sure we're honoring what made it great to begin with."

You can watch our interview with Levine at the top of the page.

ComicBook.com also spoke with director Arkasha Stevenson and star Nell Tiger Free about their love for the original The Omen.

"Oh, it was totally simple and easy, right? No stress," Stevenson joked about directing her first feature. "No ... I mean, actually I had so much support and it was just a lot of fun. I am a big Omen fan, so this was just kind of a dream come true. And we got to shoot in Rome, so ... you're so distracted by everything and how fun it is to make this film that this stress kind of wears off."

"I think that the reason that the original is so impactful is because of the character development and the really grounded nature of the relationships, but then also how the horror is executed," Stevenson added. "I think that the cinematography is very egoless, which really allows everything to feel real and to lose yourself in it. And so that was something that we really wanted to bring as much as possible to this film. And I think with Margaret's character, Nell did such an incredible job making her real that you want to spend time with her and get to know her so that when her psyche starts to shatter. You're with her."

"Not gonna lie ... A little bit of pressure," Free half-joked when asked about leading a movie in such an iconic franchise. "I love the original. I mean, who doesn't? Especially if you're a horror fan. I mean, it's kind of like a horror fan's bread and butter, in my opinion, is The Omen. So coming into it, I was like, 'I better get this right, or I'm going to be into serious trouble because I am one of them.' I know how intense horror fans can be. We can get really mad if something is not handled correctly. It's like, 'Hang on a second, specifically, this is supposed to be like this actually.' So I was like, 'Okay. I have to really bear all of that in mind and hopefully appease the community.'"

The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th.

The First Omen Director Addresses Possible Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-arkasha-stevenson-addresses-possible-sequel/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 00:17:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4c3e7837-dc2c-4783-9438-0d579cf9e128

The First Omen is being released in theaters this week, and the new movie is a prequel set directly before the events of The Omen, which was released back in 1976. While the movie leads right into the original, that doesn't mean there isn't room for another sequel, especially considering the film has gotten early praise from critics. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with The First Omen director, Arkasha Stevenson, and she spoke about some of her hopes for the future. During the chat, we asked Stevenson if she'd be open to making a sequel to The First Omen, and she gave a promising response.

"Oh, well, what is really fun is - as an Omen fan - there's the big question of where Damien came from and this film answers that, but then all these other questions pop up, and I feel like for me, I could keep going back in time and learning how the conspiracy started, where the jackal came from. It's fun to think in both temporal directions," Stevenson shared.

During the interview, Stevenson also talked more about her love for the original film.

The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th.

The First Omen Star Nell Tiger Free Compares Margaret To Other Horror Heroines https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-nell-tiger-free-compares-margaret-to-other-horror-heroines-final-girls/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 23:18:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f4c188a1-1f67-4e52-b3e0-1c8833de54a0

The First Omen is being released in theaters on Friday, and the film stars Servant's Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, a young American woman who is sent to Italy to begin a life of service to the church. However, things take a dark turn when she starts to uncover an evil conspiracy that will lead to the events of the original The Omen (1976). ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Free about the film, and she spoke about her love for the original and addressed Margaret's place in the long history of horror heroines and final girls.

"I don't know if she does," Free replied when asked how Margaret stands out from other women in horror. "I think she happily joins her sisters in the world of horror. I think that we're all doing it together, and she's just another girl who had a series of very unfortunate events happen to her and she prevails against ... I think that she just hopefully joins the ranks of these wonderful leading ladies in horror."

You can watch our interview with Free at the top of the page.

The First Omen Director and Producer Priase Nell Tiger Free:

ComicBook.com recently spoke with The First Omen producer Keith Levine and director Arkasha Stevenson, and they both had nothing but praise for Free and her performance.

"100%. Yeah," Levine shared when asked if he was involved with Free's casting. "She's incredible onscreen and offscreen, just like the best possible human being, incredible to work with. Obviously, she carries the movie on her shoulders, and yeah, we couldn't have found a better person, I think, to play Margaret."

"She felt like she had a little bit of genre cred, but also wasn't like, ... 'Oh, I know her, and I like her. I've seen Servant,' but they haven't really seen her flex muscles beyond that," he continued. "And I think what's so cool about our movie is she gets to do everything. She starts off and she's sort of this quiet young woman arriving in Rome, and when you find her at the end, she's been through some sh*t and she's a little badass, but also experienced a lot of dark stuff."

"So it is a certain, I think, skillset that is able to handle material like that. And Nell took it and just exceeded everybody's expectations, but we all believed in her so much to begin with, so we couldn't be happier with her," Levine added. "I mean, again, if you had to give the award out for 'Most Outstanding' ... it was her and she's on set every day. She's basically in every scene of the movie."

"No, it was a dream," Stevenson said of directing Free. "And I joke with her that she makes directors lazy, just so good, and has such great instincts ... It was so nice to have a partner on this film. And she does a lot of heavy - this is a big boulder for her to carry. She's in every scene just about, she's on set every single day."

"It's extremely physical as well as mentally taxing. And she was able to do those peaks and valleys so seamlessly and effortlessly that she was able to be present as a collaborator, which was wonderful," she added.

The First Omen lands exclusively in theaters on April 5th.

Yellowjackets Star Offers Update on Season 3 and Bonus Episode (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/yellowjackets-sophie-nelisse-update-season-3-bonus-episode-irenes-vow-exclusive/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 21:33:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0cbc58c9-ebd6-46e9-9444-c7c39d7cc2c1

The second season of Yellowjackets came to an end on Showtime last May, and fans of the series have been eager for the third season. It was announced at the end of 2022 that Showtime had already renewed Yellowjackets for a third season which hopefully means the show's creators will get to finish out its five-season plan. However, there's been a delay on Season 3 due to last year's WGA and SAG strikes. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Yellowjackets star Sophie N?lisse (young Shauna) about her upcoming movie, Irena's Vow. During the chat, she gave an update on Yellowjackets and the bonus episode that was teased last year.

"Yeah, we start in like a month," N?lisse shared when asked about the Season 3 production of Yellowjackets. "Yeah, we go back to Vancouver in a month. I have my apartment there. We haven't read any scripts. I don't know anything. I wish I could tell you spoilers. I don't have any."

"No," N?lisse replied when asked if she has seen the bonus episode. "I haven't been able to see it. We weren't there when they were shooting and we were all back home. So I don't know anything that happened. I mean, I read the script. It's a great script. It's super cool. But I haven't seen it. I wish they would have shown us a special little screening, but no, we don't have any."

You can watch our interview with N?lisse at the top of the page.

When Is Yellowjackets Returning For Season 3?

Last month, Yellowjackets co-creator Ashley Lyle hinted that the new season will embrace the tone of the show's first season while star Samantha Hanratty (young Misty) teased that there was a "light start date" for the new episodes.

"We're in the midst of [writing] right now. I don't want to give too much away. I always get in trouble," Lyle revealed to TheWrap. "I will say we see Season 3 as a little bit of a return to Season 1 in terms of the vibe, though. All I will say is that the girls have been out there for a while and they're thriving."

Currently, the show is not expected to return until 2025, and it's unclear how long it will be before the bonus episode debuts.

Fathom Events will release Irena's Vow in theaters on April 15th and April 16th on behalf of Quiver Distribution.

WWE's Street Profits Reveal How C4 Energy Prepares Them For Big Matches https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwe-street-profits-c4-energy-montez-ford-angelo-dawkins-matches/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 20:37:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 6dac9d56-7287-45cc-8c14-cce021ae7b92

WWE has its first-ever official energy drink. C4 Energy announced that its C4 Ultimate Energy has become the official energy drink partner of WWE, expanding the already long-running relationship between the two. Prior to this announcement, WWE partnered with C4 to release WWE-branded flavors of C4 energy drinks and pre-workout powder during WWE SummerSlam weekend. The two also collaborated this past January at WWE Royal Rumble, as C4 sponsored the Royal Rumble match's countdown clock, illuminating the ":04" second marker with the C4 logo.

Throughout this partnership, WWE has sent some of its superstars to become ambassadors of C4 products. Two of those C4 ambassadors are former WWE Tag Team Champions Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford, collectively known as the Street Profits.

"It's not just the taste. They have so many different flavors. When you think about all these other energy drink places, they have one or two bland flavors and then on top of that, when you have it, they got sugar, carbs, all this stuff that they truly believe will give you energy," Ford told ComicBook.com when asked about what drew him to C4. "C4 composed not just a drink that doesn't have any sugar or carbs, but a drink that has multiple flavors. The versatility that you need. You mean to tell me I can enjoy my pre-workout, it can taste good and give me energy and it won't give me no extra carbs or fat or sugars? Come on."

"If we ain't up to the task, C4 gets us up. C4 will get us where we need to be, telepathically, emotionally, physically," Dawkins added. "Juiced up to go out there and beat the crap out of everybody in the ring that is in front of us that is trying to deter us away from our one and only goal of becoming tag team champions. The C4 got the clutch gene. C4 gives you ice in your veins."

Ford has been aligned with C4 since the energy drink brand first partnered with WWE back in 2021, joining wife and fellow WWE superstar Bianca Belair on the company's ambassador roster.

"What does Spider-Man have? He has supernatural powers. Iron Man has a suit. Hulk has serum within his body," Ford added. "All these things that make them who they are. Who makes the Street Profits who we are? It's not just the WWE universe. It's also C4. We don't need a lab to generate this power. We don't need some big laboratory to orchestrate the success. All we need is C4."

C4 Energy is set to have a big presence all WWE WrestleMania 40 week long, including sponsoring the WrestleMania Skycam and the WWE WrestleMania 40 Night 2 press conference.

Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green Reveals Reaction To Learning Season 5 Was the End https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-discovery-sonequa-martin-green-reveals-reaction-learning-season-5-was-the-end/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 22:39:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e6872142-fc69-4d60-8d3c-864bf52c6496

Star Trek: Discovery's long-awaited fifth season is finally debuting next month on Paramount+, and it was previously announced that the upcoming season would be the show's last. The series follows Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery. In honor of the show's return, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Martin-Green, who shared her thoughts on the show's "bittersweet" ending.

"Oh, my gosh," Martin-Green replied, reacting to the fact that Season 5 was already filmed when they found out it would be the last one. "Well, I tell you, bittersweet, you know? We were shocked, but then, there was something about Season 5, as we were shooting, that felt conclusive, even though we had no idea. And I'm so grateful for it now. A lot of us are."

"Because as you'll see, as everyone will see, everything really shapes up, it has such an arc to it," she continued. "It's so culminating for all the characters and for the story at large. So, it was bittersweet in that we're just grateful that we were able to do this together, and we'll always have it. We'll always have Discovery, and then the bitter part goes without saying, right?"

You can watch our interview with Martin-Green at the top of the page.

When Does Star Trek: Discovery Return?

Star Trek: Discovery is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, April 4th on Paramount+. The first two episodes of the show's final 10-episode season will be released at the same time followed by weekly episode drops on Thursdays.

In addition to Martin-Green, the Season 5 cast includes Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr.

The People's Joker: Vera Drew Details Pushback From WB: "It's My Life, It Is Not a Batman Movie" (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/dc/news/the-peoples-joker-vera-drew-opens-up-processing-trauma-pushback-warner-bros-not-a-batman-movie-exclusive/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 21:43:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e66d8338-4ea8-4080-b0b5-7471ea5961c4

It's been a long journey for Vera Drew's The People's Joker, "a queer coming-of-age Joker origin story" that is finally getting a theatrical release. Drew uses iconic DC characters to tell her personal story of coming out as trans, and the road to the film's release has left movie and comic book fans curious. In 2022, the film had one screening at TIFF before it was pulled over "rights issues." While some believed Drew received a cease and desist from Warner Bros., she has since set the record straight about how things unfolded between her and the studio, explaining why The People's Joker should be protected under parody law. Naturally, the folks here at ComicBook.com were interested in this unique undertaking considering the film's connections to DC, but my interest goes much deeper than journalistic curiosity...

I've been lucky to call Vera Drew my close friend for the last 15 years, being present during her early days as a film student in Chicago. Together, we pursued improv and stand-up, and supported each other during our initial attempts to find our creative voices. Eventually, I moved on to entertainment journalism while she became an Emmy-nominated editor working in Hollywood. Considering my position at ComicBook.com and the upcoming release of The People's Joker, talking to Drew about the film felt like a no-brainer. I'm deeply proud of what she has accomplished, and I feel lucky to get to share her words with our readers. You can watch our entire interview at the top of the page, and read some excerpts below...

Mixing Life and Art

During the interview, Drew talked about the experience of making something personal, and how she used The People's Joker to "process my trauma not only with comedy, but with a relationship that I was in that was also very important to my trans identity, and my relationship to my mom, and also just my deep, genuine love of Batman."

"I never considered when starting that process that it would take me four years, but even without that amount of time ... editing the movie was hard," she explained. "I was editing scenes that were just conversations I had with my ex-fiance or my mom, but that's why I did it. I mythologized my life. I made it this colorful, crazy way gayer-than-actual-reality [movie]. Even though the world the Joker/the Harlequin lives in is just as transphobic and horrible as ours, the world is oozing gayness that I think has softened it all, every step of the way."

"I really do think filmmaking is kind of a mental illness on some level," Drew added. "It's something that you live with, and you learn to maintain, and be healthy within ... And I don't think I knew my limits when I started."

Setting The Record Straight

(Photo: Altered Innocence)

Drew also spoke about The People's Joker getting pulled from TIFF, and while it's a subject that comes up a lot, she's glad to have the opportunity to "clarify" the situation.

"We never got a cease and desist," Drew explained. "We literally got an email from their legal department that just said, 'We think this infringes on our brand, and we would like you to show this email to anybody that wants to buy the film or screen the film,' which I did every step of the way."

Drew recalled being in Toronto with her co-writer Brie LeRose and The Penguin actor, Nate Faustyn, when the Warner Bros. email came through. "I don't think any of us slept that 72-hour period. We were just chain smoking and going like, 'What the f*ck is Discovery Channel going to do to us?'"

Thankfully, Drew received many reassuring messages from friends, including comedian and actor, Tim Heidecker. He pointed out that she was getting a lot of great press thanks to TIFF. "It gave me a second just to go, 'Okay, cool. It's all going to be fine.' This movie was never going to get this level of press if that thing didn't happen," Drew explained.

Another silver lining came from the movie's unexpected TIFF drama. It made Drew realize the film needed more work. "I needed a second to climb out of my Joker cave, and look around and see what was happening." Drew then pulled the film from other festivals and focused on secret screenings before taking it to more festivals the following year. Drew admits she was "intimidated by Warner Bros," but joked that she probably shouldn't say that now.

"I kind of always knew what I was doing had some risk involved with how it could be perceived, but I had gone a very long way to ensure that it was falling squarely under parody," she explained.

"I really do think The People's Joker is protected by fair use if only because it is a Joker movie that only I could make," Drew added. "It's my life. It is not a Batman movie."

Batman Forever's Influence:

mv5bnjywyznmyzktyzjjny00ymrmltliymutyjrmn2jmmzniotu1xkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymjy1otq0mda-v1.jpg
(Photo: Warner Bros.)

While The People's Joker is a movie only Drew could make, she is still a lover of Batman. When asked if she had a favorite comic book movie, Drew recalled seeing Batman Forever on the big screen with her dad when she was only six. Not only was it her first PG-13 movie in theaters, but it was also coming at a time when "content was very gatekept" in her house. Seeing the movie on the big screen ended up being a formative experience, and Joel Schumacher's Batman films have since served as an inspiration to her.

"I love both of his Batman movies so much just because they're big, expensive, gay art films," she shared.

However, Drew wasn't always quick to admit her love for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. She confessed she spent some of her college years trying to appear "cool," especially considering Christopher Nolan's notoriously serious The Dark Knight trilogy was in its heyday. Now, she attributes coming as trans as part of the reason she was able to embrace her love for Schumacher.

"I think the second I started putting estrogen in my body, I became way more cringe," she said with a laugh. "Not suggesting there's a correlation. I think it's just once you start actually leaning into authenticity ... you kind of let go of these things."

Drew also recalled being greatly affected by Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever. "I don't know what happened, but I felt represented by her on screen in this way," Drew explained. "I do think that was probably a sexual awakening for a lot of people, but for me, it was less that and more just a gender experience ... 'Why do I want to look like this woman? Why do I want Batman to look at me the way he's looking at her? Why do I feel represented by Dr. Chase Meridian when I'm a 6-year-old boy?'"

What's Next For Vera Drew?

screen-shot-2024-03-30-at-4-44-14-pm.png
(Photo: Altered Innocence)

Now that The People's Joker is finally getting its long-awaited release, Drew is thinking about her next projects. While she does want to "revisit" these characters one day, teasing a "People's trilogy," she also has some other exciting projects on the horizon. She revealed she is working on a trans body horror movie, which she says will be "pretty cool." In addition to her original ideas, Drew would also be down to join some other franchises.

"I do love IP, though. If there are any franchises out there that would like to bring me in, in an official capacity, I definitely would consider it. I was actually thinking the other day, nobody's capitalized on the Valley of the Dolls universe yet ... If you want help rebooting that, I am your girl, because that's another one that runs pretty deep and personal."

The People's Joker is heading to Los Angeles, Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, and Washington, D.C. starting April 5th. You can find dates and showtimes here.

Batman Unburied Producer Keith Levine Teases Season 2 (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/dc/news/batman-unburied-producer-keith-levine-teases-season-2-exclusive/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 02:03:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2b3f25f1-392f-49cb-86a6-ece350c9b146

DC's Batman Unburied scripted podcast was released back in 2022, and the series was renewed for a second season shortly after the first season came to an end. It's been nearly two years since the announcement, and while the show has yet to return, it did have a spinoff titled The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark that was released last year. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Batman Unburied producer, Keith Levine, about his latest project, The First Omen. During the interview, we asked Levine if there were any updates about the DC podcast's second season.

"Well, this one's tricky because we're dealing with big tech and they can show up at your door," Levine explained. "But we did the Riddler podcast, which is sort of set in the Batman Unburied universe. But we are doing a Season 2 of Batman Unburied, and we've written our scripts and we're about to move into the recording phase. I can't say when it's coming, but it is in the mix and it is happening and we're excited about it. I think it's going to be building off of what everybody loved about Season One and trying to keep it going in this next season."

You can check out our interview with Keith Levine at the top of the page.

What Is Batman Unburied About?

Here is the official synopsis of the first season of Batman Unburied: "When audiences meet Bruce Wayne, he is a forensic pathologist, working in the bowels of Gotham Hospital and tasked with examining the victims of The Harvester, a gruesome serial killer preying on Gotham's citizens. Not only will the superhero be forced to face his own mental demons, but he will also have to overcome them in order to save the citizens of Gotham as his alter-ego, Batman."

From writer David Goyer, Season One of Batman Unburied starred Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Hasan Minhaj as The Riddler along with Gina Rodriguez as Barbara Gordon, Sam Witwer as The Harvester, and Emmy Raver-Lampman as Poison Ivy.

Season One of the podcast featured a diverse cast which brought new perspectives on these iconic characters, particularly in terms of Bruce Wayne/Batman, something that Duke spoke about during the show's "Dive Into The Batman Audio Universe" panel in 2022.

"It's always been joked that Bruce Wayne's superpower has been white privilege and I had to go through this period of really imagining and setting myself free to find a way in - this man who completely distrusts the justice system so much that he decides to take it into this own hands - this feels a lot more than the diasporic Black experience that I knew," Duke said.

Stay tuned for more updates about Batman Unburied. The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th.

Hellraiser (2022) Producer Addresses Franchise's Future (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hellraiser-2022-producer-addresses-franchises-future-exclusive/ Sat, 30 Mar 2024 22:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2b6f339a-d937-4195-94da-17990623a4e6

The Hellraiser reboot was released on Hulu back in 2022, and the horror film was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Fans are eager to find out what's next for the franchise especially after director David Bruckner shared his hopes for a follow-up last year. This week, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Hellraiser producer Keith Levine about his latest project, The First Omen. During the interview, we asked if there were any updates about Hellraiser. While a sequel hasn't been officially announced, Levine teased plans for a follow-up to the 2022 film.

"Yeah. We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations," Levine revealed. "I can't exactly say where we're at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design, figuring out how we're going to pull them off, and we learned so much."

"And I think moving forward, we love that all that knowledge is sort of banked and that time has been spent," he continued. "So we think that moving forward and going into another movie is just going to be even crazier and even more awesome. So yeah, that's something we're definitely hard at work on, and hope we will have more news soon."

What Is The First Omen About?

In The First Omen, when a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, The First Omen stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman), with Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), and Bill Nighy (Living).

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Stevenson talked about her love for the original The Omen.

The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th. Stay tuned for more updates about Hellraiser.

The First Omen Director Arkasha Stevenson Wants To Join The Exorcist Franchise https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-director-arkasha-stevenson-wants-to-join-the-exorcist-franchise/ Sat, 30 Mar 2024 18:56:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 57a5ddc9-a884-4be4-b339-de734b111bcb

The First Omen is being released in theaters next week, and the new horror flick is set before the events of the original The Omen (1976). The movie was helmed by Arkasha Stevenson, who recently talked to ComicBook.com about her love for horror. During the chat, Stevenson revealed The Omen isn't the only longstanding franchise she is interested in tackling. The director told us that she would love to join the world of The Exorcist.

"Oh gosh. Yeah," Stevenson replied when asked if there were any other horror franchises she'd like to be a part of. "Well, I mean, there's so many films that I would love to be a part of either bringing back to life or be a part of it. And this might be really trite, but I mean, I loved The Exorcist growing up. I have watched it over a million times. Not to be a total freak, but I have. And there's so much artistry in that film, and there's so much truth in that film that makes it really frightening ... There's too many films to actually talk about."

What Is The Next Exorcist Movie?

The Exorcist: Believer was released in theaters last year, and the legacy sequel was helmed by Halloween (2018) director, David Gordon Green. The movie wasn't the success the filmmakers had hoped for. NBCUniversal paid $400 million for the rights to The Exorcist, but the new movie only earned $137 million worldwide. The film also ended up with a "Rotten" critics score of 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience score only reached 59%. ComicBook.com's Kofi Outlaw gave the reboot a 2 out of 5, and called it "an odd and misguided attempt at a direct sequel" that "fails to provide any new soul to the franchise." Despite the movie's poor reception, a sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver was still announced for 2025. However, it's been confirmed that Green will not be returning to direct, and the horror film has been pushed back.

"We are definitely going to make another Exorcist movie, but I wanted more time to figure out what it would be. I have no idea what it's going to be yet," producer Jason Blum shared with The Direct earlier this month.

Lousy Carter's David Krumholtz on How His Own Nickname Shaped His Character https://comicbook.com/movies/news/lousy-carter-david-krumholtz-nickname-shaped-character/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 22:33:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 57681412-ac21-4916-a104-60183c3be087

Oppenheimer and The Santa Clause favorite David Krumholtz stars in Lousy Carter, a new comedy where the title isn't just for kicks but the nickname for his character. Speaking with ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview for Lousy Carter, now playing in theaters and available digitally, we asked Krumholtz if a bad childhood nickname of his own had any influence on playing "Lousy" Carter, the answer...may not surprise you.

"Well, people called me Krummy for a really long time, which is a lot like Lousy and a lot of people still call me Krummy, closer friends. But yeah, Krummy was my nickname so much so that I remember there was a kid named Edgar in my class who I'd gotten to know for months on end who would call me Krummy every day because everybody else called me Krummy. And then one day he asked me like what nationality Krummy was from? And I said, dude, my name's not Krummy . My name is David and my last name is Krumholtz. And he was like, oh I thought your name was Krummy. Like no, my name is David.'

He continued, "When I was doing Numbers, everybody called me Krummy on set and it started to annoy me a little bit because like it would be some new PAs first day and I'd never met them before and they'd say 'Krummy welcome to work.' And I'd be like, 'Dude, I don't know. You don't be calling me Krummy.' Then my ex manager used to introduce me at Hollywood parties as Krummy to executives who then just readily assumed I was his assistant, and I had to literally call him and say, listen from now on. Don't do that. Call me David, people don't know me and they're not gonna know if you call me Krummy who the hell I am."

In Lousy Carter, written and directed by auteur filmmaker Bob Byington, David Krumholtz stars as a ne'er-do-well literature professor adrift on a soulless college campus who learns he only has six months to live. With the clock ticking, will he change his ways? Probably not.

David Krumholtz leads a cast that also includes Martin Starr (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Silicon Valley), Olivia Thirlby (June, Dredd), Jocelyn DeBoer (Greener Grass), with Stephen Root (King of the Hill, Office Space), and introducing Luxy Banner. Lousy Carter is now playing in theaters and available digitally.

The First Omen's Director and Star Talk Being Fans of the Original https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-arkasha-stevenson-nell-tiger-free-talk-being-fans-of-the-original-horror/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 19:41:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 63ce34e0-0405-48d6-9fc4-547c1dfcf141

The First Omen is heading to theaters next week, and the film is set before the events of the original The Omen, which was released back in 1976. The new film stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant, Game of Thrones) as a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church when she encounters a dark conspiracy. The new movie was helmed by Arkasha Stevenson, who has directed episodes of Legion and Brand New Cherry Flavor. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Stevenson and Free, and they both spoke about their love for the original The Omen.

How Acting Coach Bernard Hiller Facilitates Hollywood's Next Big Stars https://comicbook.com/movies/news/acting-coach-bernard-hiller-facilitates-hollywood-next-stars/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 18:11:00 +0000 Liam Crowley e9927ca3-a1bf-445d-98cc-237a15603275

Bernard Hiller's fingerprints are all over the entertainment industry. Over the course of three decades as an acting coach, Hiller has earned himself the nickname the "transformational wizard" thanks to his ability to shepherd lost prospective actors towards a self-starting mentality.

"I'm a facilitator, helping people connect to their talent and their potential," Hiller told ComicBook.com. "I help people find a roadmap to their possibilities. I'm also a coach, which means that I'm also a mentor, and a mentor can help you find a part of yourself that you could never find on your own. One of the things that you can tell from successful people is that they always ask for help. Average people never do."

bernard-hiller-al-pacino

Hiller's past masterclasses have featured acting legends like Al Pacino and Bryan Cranston in guest speaking roles. While he puts a large emphasis on the acting realm within his teachings, Hiller's philosophies are applicable to any industry.

"I found that the acting exercises and training that I have created or discovered to be the most powerful training in the world for whatever you want," Hiller noted. "My whole philosophy is helping you become the person that you would need to be to achieve what you want. What kind of a person would you need to be to be able to open a store? To be an entrepreneur? The idea there comes from the acting world, because each and every one of us is acting.

"When I say acting, I don't mean fake, but you are talking to me now as a friend, then you're a boyfriend, then you're a businessman. You actually expect other people to play the part. We are all playing parts. How well you play that part will determine your success. All we do is play roles. You couldn't live without acting. Acting is something that is part of all of us."

One of Hiller's closest partnerships in Hollywood comes with actress Lindsay Lohan. The two have collaborated for over seven years, and Lohan credits Hiller for being someone who "changed her life," mentioning that he has helped her see "what's not written on the page."

Outside of stars like Lohan, who's first acting credit came when she was just seven years old, Hiller finds that many who possess talent keep it dormant.

"I find that most people are not in show business. They're in hide business," Hiller continued. "They're hiding their gifts, they're hiding their talents. There's a game called hide and seek, a great game for kids. What I've discovered is adults are playing it, but no one's looking for you. They're just hiding. I'm saying it's time to come out of hiding. If you have a gift, if you have a talent, you need to come up and put it in front of people. No one's looking for you. You have to put yourself in front so they know it's there. I believe that that's really our mission is that we need to give our gifts and the world would be a better place."

Monster House Director Addresses Possible Sequel or Spinoff https://comicbook.com/horror/news/monster-house-movie-sequel-future-franchise-spinoff-reaction-gil-kenan/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 16:11:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 37e34f1d-7708-432a-b0f0-401d0fcc9fd7

Thanks to its blend of a spooky and silly story, 2006's Monster House has earned a devout following over the years and earned fans of all ages, with director Gil Kenan recently looking back on how much he loved the project and how he wouldn't rule out a return to that world. What is holding a sequel back, however, is how satisfying the resolution of the original film was and how the idea for a follow-up hasn't come to him yet. He also reflected on the importance of movies that are accessible and also inject a healthy dose of genuine frights, which is part of what he aimed to do with his latest film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters now.

"I love that movie so much and I am looking to find something else that takes place, tonally, in that same world in animation. There might be another Monster House story, I haven't had the idea in the years since. Also, it feels like that movie had such a complete story," Kenan shared with ComicBook.com. "The reason to revisit a film series is always characters, that is the reason to do it. And I am still friends with a lot of the cast from that film and stayed in touch, especially with the young cast from that film. They're all doing so well, it's been amazing to watch them grow into adults."

He continued, "Never say never ... That was my first movie and I feel like, for me, it was a tonal calling card as much as anything, it was a reflection of the same experiences I had with movies like Ghostbusters and Gremlins and The Goonies and Beetlejuice, all movies that weren't afraid to thematically go a little darker and to lift back the curtain on some of the scarier parts of the process of growing up, or just trying to live your life as a human in this world. That all felt really authentic to me, even as a young movie lover. There was a spate of films made in the '80s that weren't afraid to shine a light on those themes, and then that went out of fashion, and it's still out of fashion. I feel like we're out here doing our part, trying to add a little bit more -- especially for younger audiences, a little bit more of a window into the full scope of the human experience, because that just means you're having a deeper connection to the movie that you're watching, and a more authentic one."

In Monster House, a group of kids notice that the house across the street has a habit of making kids disappear, almost as though it has a life of its own. On Halloween, they set out to uncover the mystery and learn about the abode's dark past.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started - the iconic New York City firehouse - to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who've developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters now.

Deadpool/Wolverine: WWII First Look: Writer Joe Kelly Dives Into the Marvel Team-Up (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/comics/news/deadpool-and-wolverine-wwiii-joe-kelly-adam-kubert-first-look-interview-marvel/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 16:00:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 9567846d-1861-47ce-940c-5b40dfa82a8b

Joe Kelly is no stranger to Deadpool, having written what many consider an unsurpassed run on the character's solo title in the late 1990s that solidified Wade Wilson's status as a marquee Marvel character, which he's maintained ever since. Kelly has occasionally returned to Deadpool's orbit, most notably in the 2016-2017 Spider-Man/Deadpool series, which saw Wade teaming up with Spider-Man, a hero he looks up to. Kelly is back at Marvel with a similar project as he joins legendary X-Men artist Adam Kubert on Deadpool/Wolverine: WWIII. The first issue of the new series launches in May, right about when the hype train for the highly-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine movie should be pulling out of the station.

ComicBook.com had the opportunity to speak with Kelly over the phone about Deadpool/Wolverine: WWIII. Marvel Comics has also provided ComicBook.com with an exclusive first look at Kubert's work on Deadpool/Wolverine: WWIII #1. Our conversation with Kelly and Kubert's artwork follows.

I don't know if you heard, but a Deadpool & Wolverine movie is coming out this summer, so it's no surprise that Marvel might want to put out a comic with the same or similar name on the shelf. Where did this idea for Deadpool/Wolverine: WWIII come from? Did they bring you a pretty fully formed pitch? Was it something you've had in your back pocket for a while? What's the genesis of the story?

Joe Kelly: I'm lucky that the people at Marvel are kind enough to think of me when crazy stuff comes their way. And Mark Basso, the editor, reached out about whether I'd be interested in doing something like this. And people have asked about Deadpool and me for a while. Sometimes I'm tempted to go back and do some Deadpool stuff, but I also feel like I did a lot of stories that I wanted to do, and unless there's a different angle, I don't know if I'm going to jump in. So, something like Spider-Man/Deadpool with Ed McGuinness is a no-brainer. That's like, "Oh, I love Spider-Man, I love Deadpool, I'm going to get to work with Ed. Perfect."

That was how it was with this. Mark called up and said, "We want to do this Deadpool/Wolverine thing, and what do you think about working with Adam?" And it's like, okay, well that's it. Here's a magic formula right there. I love Adam, and I haven't gotten to do a lot of Wolverine stuff -- I wrote him in X-Men, but obviously as one piece of a much bigger tapestry -- so those elements were cool.

And then they had the title, which was this Deadpool/Wolverine: WWIII, and that was it. Then stuff got cooked up from there, and Mark was like, "I don't know what this title is exactly, but we thought it was cool." I was like, "Okay, great. Let's go." And then the story got cooked up.

I would say that the title turned into a surprise for me, and I hope it will for everybody else as well. I would not take it too literally. I think with Deadpool you can pretty much guarantee that literal is almost always going to get you in trouble.

Deadpool is a character who has been treated differently, tonally, over the years, ranging from serious to humorous. Then you put him with Wolverine and their relationship is similar, where they're both like ex-mercenaries, but also have a tense "friendship," if you could call it that. Where does this series fall on that humorous to serious-action scale? How does it compare to the Deadpool stories that people know you for?

I think it goes back to probably where I was on this series, to begin with. My favorite version of Deadpool, for me -- has nothing to do with what other people do because I think people have done amazing work with this character -- but I like this tortured clown version where, yeah, he's funny, I love a funny Deadpool, but there's always something dark going on beneath the surface. Sometimes it's his impulse control issues that he's got to work through, and sometimes it's self-loathing that he's trying to process, or he is making up for the sins of his past. That's my favorite version of him, a guy who knows that he wasn't the best human, and is trying, in some ways, to make up for that.

And that's what draws him to characters like Wolverine or Spider-Man. Spider-Man, there are maybe more layers to that relationship, but he certainly sees Spidey as the ultimate hero, the best, the goodest of the good. But Wolverine is somebody who walked a similar path. He was a tough guy; he was a mercenary. He's done bad things in his life, and yet he's probably one of the big paragons of virtue in the Marvel universe. That attracts Deadpool to Wolverine in a lot of ways.

I think with Wolverine, I don't know that he knows that he believes that Wade is capable of that kind of change, and that makes for a strong dynamic. There was a lot of stuff in [Uncanny] X-Force that they were together in, where things were very much not pretty because of the way that Deadpool chose to handle situations and where Wolverine would draw the line. I think that's interesting fodder for these guys.

dpwolvwwiii2024001006-col-copy.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

It sounds like maybe Deadpool would like to believe there's some of himself in Wolverine, but maybe Wolverine is doesn't want to see any of himself in Deadpool, if that makes sense?

Yeah, that's 100% true. Taking that as a character basis for these guys and as a driver for the story, and then you get into this wonderful stuff about these are probably two of the most indestructible characters in the Marvel universe, which makes for a lot of opportunity for really savage action. And this thing gets brutal -- over-the-top brutal -- which I find hard to say without laughing because it makes me giddy how nasty we can beat these characters and they'll bounce back.

Can you say anything more about that aspect of the book? Is this something that'll make people's stomach churn a little bit? More over the top? How gritty and gory are we going?

I hope it's both. I think for me, there are body horror elements. It feels like a natural fit, especially where the story ultimately led us. But throwing those guys into... We've seen both guys get put through the physical ringer in many ways, and part of the fun is trying to one-up the next person, or whoever played with these characters before you, but always in service of the story. And I think in this case, my hope at least, is that we came up with a way to use these guys' very, very unique abilities in a way that reflects what's going on with them emotionally, which may sound like a stretch for body horror, but we tried, so we'll see if it works.

As you mentioned earlier, you're working with Adam Kubert on this book, an iconic artist for Marvel and one whose name turns up on practically any list of the best X-Men artists. How are you approaching your collaboration with him besides getting him to draw grisly body horror stuff? Did you write the story in a way that plays to his strengths? Are you trying to do things that will challenge him and get him to do things maybe he hasn't done before and wanted to try? What's the approach there?

Well, I was so excited to get to work with Adam again. It had been a long time since we had done a book together, and I know he's good at everything. I mean, he's literally good at everything. Part of it is letting him know that, when it comes to the storytelling and the collaborative aspects of putting a comic together, I trust him implicitly. Whatever he wants to do works. It's like, "What would be fun for you? What are some weird story elements that will engage you and help push things a little bit harder?" And a lot of that sometimes comes down to interesting layouts and storytelling techniques that he doesn't always get to do because, in an ongoing, that's a little bit challenging to maintain. But we do some fun graphical things in this book that he maybe doesn't always get the chance to, letting him off the chain, because he literally can do it all.

And it's funny, I think of him in some ways as a "classic superhero artist," with quotes around it. And then you look at his stuff and realize how expressionistic he can go. He can push the envelope, maybe not to a Sienkiewicz extreme, but a lot more expressiveness and, I don't know... It's a grounded yet heightened world that he constructs. Giving him the opportunity to do as much of that as possible is my goal, and he's so open to ideas, throwing things back and forth, and thoughts on the script. He's an easy guy to work with and super fun, so it was nothing but joys, and the mutual admiration society all around.

What can you tell me about the book's new villain, Delta? The press release describes them as an agent of change. Can you give me any more context or details?

Part of the big question in this story in general is, "Can people change?" That's probably one of the root questions these guys struggle with in the story. Delta is an agent of change. It's his whole raison d'etre. He is a character who exists to facilitate the change that people want to make within themselves, and he does so for a variety of motivations, not the least of which is the entertainment of others. He's created whole cloth for this story, but it's always about what's the character stuff first, and what would be the most interesting exchange between Wolverine and Deadpool, and then breaking out and externalizing that stuff with the villains, and settings, and action to illustrate that point. It is a story about change, as in my not-at-all-clever naming of the character after the symbol for change. I think he's cool, and certainly, Adam brings him to life in a spectacular fashion.

If he does these things, at least sometimes, for the entertainment of others, are we talking about a showman-style villain in the vein of Arcade or Mojo?

No, not exactly that. It's more that it facilitates his vocation and his avocation. Science is expensive, and if you want to do good science, you need backing from somewhere. There are some people who are very wealthy and who enjoy the idea of watching these "becomings," as they're called in the book, and will pay a lot of money to see these superpowered becomings. That's what this guy specializes in. Wolverine and Deadpool wind up pulled into this world of treating superhumans as a spectator sport, what happens when you give people the thing they think they want, which is more power, and just how it often goes catastrophically wrong.

Having done Spider-Man/Deadpool already and a Daredevil/Deadpool Annual a while back, and now Deadpool/Wolverine, are there any remaining Deadpool team-up stories you've got in mind that you'd like to tell?

I feel like I was thinking about this quasi-recently, but now I don't remember who I thought would be on that list. There's an interesting Cap/Deadpool thing. I don't exactly know what it is but because Cap is so good and pure, what happens when you stick those guys together? That's sort of interesting to me. There are more, but I'm completely blanking but it's a good question because I think the fun thing about Deadpool is that he works as such a twisted mirror for the other characters you pit him against. With Spidey, it's like the road not traveled, and that's a fun way to look at these two generally funny characters put together.

With Wolverine, I wouldn't exactly say it's a darker mirror. They're cut from the same cloth, but one had guiding hands that helped them back into a lighter place, and the other didn't. To see those subtle differences and how they intersect, and what happens when you look at somebody that reminds you of the worst parts of yourself, that brings up interesting dynamics, certainly for a character like Wolverine who's worked so hard to distance himself from who he used to be, or who he was at various points of his life.

There are many characters that can use that type of mirror. And then there's also just the fun as hell, how wild and bouncy can you go with Deadpool? Deadpool and Doctor Strange would be a fun couple of guys to hang out with for a while, at least to me.

(Photo: Marvel Comics)

I'm going to go a little off-topic because you're one of the major contributors to Deadpool's comic book history and ask if there's anyone from his supporting cast that you'd still like to see get brought into the live-action movie series.

Yeah, absolutely. I would love to see -- if somebody could because he was a challenging character for us -- but T-Ray. T-Ray was an important character during the run, but he was so specific to a version of Wade's backstory that we didn't get to do -- we had to reverse course at the last second because of the book being canceled and not canceled and canceled, and not canceled. I always loved him. I always loved this ridiculous design that Ed did, with the Band-Aid on the nose and the weird sorcery. Everything about him I just thought was cool and scary. It would be really cool to see T-Ray hit the screen someday.

And then all the knuckleheads from the Hellhouse. They were so fun and stupid that now I think you could pull off those characters as cannon fodder. Just one of these guys taking up the big screen would be great.

I did not create her, but Typhoid Mary is such a wild, awesome character, and she was critical to the early part of the run. It would be great to see her in a film as well.

But yeah, mostly I would say T-Ray, because once we got Blind Al, then it was like, "Oh, all right, life is good," especially the way she's portrayed so masterfully, it's just like, "Yeah, that's some good stuff right there."

Before I let you go, I know you split your time between different mediums. Are there any other comics projects in the works that fans should be keeping their eyes out for?

I'm talking to Marvel about more stuff, which is always awesome. I love working at both big companies, but Marvel was where I got my start, so anytime I have an opportunity to go back there, it brings out the kid in me, iit makes me really happy.

I'm doing more independent books, but they're all in the early stages, so Ken Nimura and I did Immortal Sergeant last year and I decided waiting 15 years between books is a bad idea, so we'll do another one much sooner than later. So, a couple of things on the horizon, but nothing immediate.

Fantastic Four: David Krumholtz Details Why He Campaigned to Play The Thing https://comicbook.com/movies/news/david-krumholtz-the-thing-fantastic-four-reboot-reaction-explained-mcu/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 15:49:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 61814c3d-bd27-4a55-bf88-8b5f5a620b6e

Actor David Krumholtz has been especially active on social media in the last few months, largely due to the promotional cycle for the various awards Oppenheimer celebrated, which resulted in him sharing his love of the Fantastic Four online and he even suggested he should play The Thing in Marvel Studios' planned reboot of the superhero team. As far as what inspired this specific request to take on the beloved character, Krumholtz reflected on how he grew up with a passion for Marvel and his overall interest in the high-tech process of bringing such a character to life in a blockbuster, though admitted he would be happy to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any capacity. Fans can next see Krumholtz in Lousy Carter, which hits theaters and Digital on March 29th.

"I grew up reading Marvel comics obsessively and they saved me. I think, for a lot of young people, you emulate superheroes, you wish you had those powers, you wish you were somehow able to save people," Krumholtz revealed to ComicBook.com. "I'm an empath so that felt good to me. I loved every aspect of it. When the MCU happened, the satisfaction in seeing the actual costumes and seeing what they could do and do it accurately and authentically, it was exactly my dream come true. When you read those comics, it's hard not to imagine them as films, and they did it. They did it really, really well. It was emotional, for me."

He continued, "I still very much want to be part of the MCU at some point. I have no qualms about ... It's not cool to say that right now. I don't care. To me, it's the coolest thing. The Thing just felt like a good fit, to some extent. I think Ebon Moss-Bachrach is gonna do an amazing job with that. A lot of it is motion-capture and voice stuff so I really wanted to try that and I've never done that before, so that was something that intrigued me big time. Just to be part of the team, I've always loved that character, but you never know. Something will come up, or not, I'll end up playing Ghost Rider's orthodontist."

Krumholtz previously confirmed that his posts resulted in him meeting with The Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman, but the actor has since expressed how he should instead play the villain Mole Man.

In Lousy Carter, David Krumholtz stars as a ne'er-do-well literature professor adrift on a soulless college campus who learns he only has six months to live. With the clock ticking, will he change his ways? Probably not. Auteur writer/director Bob Byington's slyly subversive comedy also features comedy all-stars Martin Starr, Olivia Thirlby, Jocelyn DeBoer, Macon Blair, and Stephen Root.

Lousy Carter hits theaters and Digital on March 29th.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enters a new era in July when IDW Publishing ships the first issue of its relaunched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ongoing series, written by Jason Aaron. However, Ninja Turtles fans can get their first taste of Aaron's take on Turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1 in June. The issue will offer a glimpse at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe after the finale of the current series in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150, with the aftermath explored in several upcoming TMNT titles, as well as a 10-page prelude story from Aaron and artist Chris Burnham, one of the four artists kicking off the new Turtles era with stories that each focus on a different member of the Turtles family.

Burnham is known for his work on superhero comics like Batman Incorporated and Unstoppable Doom Patrol, and creator-owned books like Nameless and DIE!DIE!DIE!. He'll draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4, focusing on Donatello, the same Turtle featured in his and Aaron's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha story. The focus on Donnie harkens back to Burnham's first encounter with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which pre-dates the advent of "Turtlemania" in the late 1980s and 1990s.

"I think the first one I read was the Donatello one-issue micro-series, actually," Burnham recalls while speaking to ComicBook.com via video chat. "I missed the first couple of issues. But somehow or other, I turned onto it a year or two into it and loved it right from the jump. I was in it from, I guess, not the ground floor, but just about. To the point where when the cartoon came out, I was like, 'What's with the multicolored headbands? This is bulls---.' So, I was a sourpuss fan from the start. That particular one-issue micro series is one of my all-time favorite comics. I mean, it's a Jack Kirby tribute. I had no idea who Jack Kirby was. That element of it did not occur to me until I was in college or something. It's like, 'Oh, wait, what?' So yeah, that's high up there."

When ComicBook.com spoke to Aaron in February, the writer expressed a desire to return to the "grit" of those early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issues that creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird wrote, drew, and self-published through their company, Mirage Studios. For Burnham, that means infusing his work with what he remembers of those early TMNT comics without direct references. (You can get a sense of what that looks like from the process and preview pages accompanying this interview.)

"I was pretty intentionally not drawing smooth lines," Burnham says. "I was trying to draw angular and chunky. I did not look at the old stuff at all. I didn't want to get caught up in trying to replicate the Eastman and Laird style. So, it was just like channeling my memory of that stuff. Hopefully, I'm shooting for the vicinity of Eastman and Laird, plus the Jim Lawson and Eric Talbot stuff. So, that nasty, chunky-looking style is what I'm looking for. Everything is halfway gross and halfway cartoony and sketchy and shaded and stuff. That is what I'm searching for. So, hopefully, it does not look slick at all. If it looks like s---, then it's on purpose."

Burnham relies on his artistic instincts and knowledge for his Turtles work. If there's something he's unsure of, "Google Images knows what that looks like." However, he took some inspiration from an iconic martial artist in figuring out how to make Donatello's fighting style work on the page.

"I was looking at what does it look like when a person is using a bow staff," Burnham says. "And most of the guys you see are real skinny dudes, but a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, just by their nature, has a big giant shell on their back. So, when they're spinning the bow around, it's not going to work the way it works on a skinny dude. Sammo Hung is amazing with a bow staff, and he's a pretty portly dude. If you squint, you can shift his mass from the front to the back, and it is easy to turn him into a turtle. That was part of me getting my head around how a bow staff works when you've got a giant shell on your back. Sammo Hung helped me out with that."

(Photo: Chris Burnham's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1 cover sketch, IDW Publishing)

That situation scratches the surface of the inherent humorous absurdity in any story involving Ninja Turtles. That humor isn't lost on Burnham.

"Every drawing you draw a Turtle should somehow feel like a stupid joke," he says. "The whole thing is kind of a joke on Daredevil. The whole thing is inherently kind of stupid, and then you layer on all the violence and the drama, and it builds up some lore behind it. But at its core, it's a dumb joke for kids. So, I feel like you always have to have at least one foot planted there.

"But yet, it is a challenge. How does it work? A lot of people draw the turtles as basically a Jim Lee drawing. I don't know if he's got a backpack on, and instead of a six-pack abs, they draw a six-pack shell on the front. That looks like a dude. I'm trying to make it look like a weird, cute little monster who happens to be good at karate, or whatever."

After the 10-page story in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1, Burnham is drawing the Donatello-focused Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4, which goes on sale in October. We know that Rafael Albuquerque, who is drawing the Michelangelo-focused story of August's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2, will return to the series for its first full arc launching in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #5. As for Burham's future with the new Turtles series after his initial two tales, that remains uncertain.

"I think it is somewhat open-ended," Burnham says of possibly returning to draw a future TMNT arc. "I don't know if it's been nailed down. I don't know how to answer it safely. If there's time for me to do it, I would love to come back for an arc, but who knows? Scheduling out these things is difficult. Everyone's got a million moving parts in their life. If I could hit pause on the universe, I'd love to do an arc."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1 goes on sale on June 5th. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 follows in July. Burnham's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 goes on sale in October.

Simu Liu Opens Up About Adopting From Arthur The King Set: "That Dog Did End Up Saving My Life." https://comicbook.com/movies/news/simu-liu-adopting-arthur-the-king-set-dog-saving-my-life/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 18:55:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 96531722-c91a-43de-b142-056ae2620be8

Part of Arthur the King will live with Simu Liu forever. The Shang-Chi actor filmed the adventure racing story two years ago in the Dominican Republic, teaming up with Mark Wahlberg (Michael), Nathalie Emmanuel (Olivia), and Ali Suliman (Chik) to embark on a cross-country endurance-based competition. During the race, the team comes across Arthur, a stray dog who makes great efforts to run alongside them. Arthur, played by a dog named Ukai, was just one of many canines on set, as Arthur the King's behind-the-scenes team populated certain scenes with groupings of background dogs.

simu-liu-arthur-the-king

"We showed up for set one day and there were all these dogs," Liu told ComicBook.com. "We were told that they were playing background dogs just to sprinkle around in the deep background, but that they all were adoptable. They were all from this one shelter out of Santa Domingo. I basically knew at that point. When you show up to set and there's that many dogs, you're just like, 'Cut! Okay, great scene. Peace.' I just went in the corner and I start playing with the dogs. Chopa was just the one that I had this special connection with."

As chronicled in Arthur the King, Liu's character Leo nearly perishes as he runs full speed towards a hidden cliff. Arthur speeds past him and barks incessantly, warning Leo of the imminent danger. After some back and forth, Leo notices the drop and staggers backwards, shook at the realization that he would've fallen to his death had Arthur not interfered.

Shortly after, Leo has a heart-to-heart with Arthur, offering the stray dog a meatball and thanking him for "saving [his] life."

"It definitely hits differently when I watch it back," Liu said of that line. "I remember that was still quite early on in the shoot that we shot that scene. I had not met Chopa yet. I met Chopa probably like three quarters of the way through. It really did end up being life imitating art, imitating life, because it was based on a true story. That dog did end up saving my life. I had just said goodbye to a very good furry friend of mine whom I was with for seven years.

"I had taken some time to grieve, as everyone does, and you really feel that loss. I was taking the time to really process. It had been over a year and I was just starting to get to the point where I was readying myself to form another one of those bonds. She came into my life at the perfect moment."

Arthur the King is now in theaters.

Tony Khan Clarifies AEW Continental Crown Rules, Reveals When Continental Classic Will Return https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/tony-khan-clarifies-aew-continental-crown-rules-continental-classic-return/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 14:29:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 7e80e811-ed57-4f43-9ebc-0830ee6507f0

All Elite Wrestling has dipped into one of professional wrestling's most notable tournament structures. Last fall, AEW launched the AEW Continental Classic, a round robin tournament akin to New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax. The AEW Continental Classic took 12 competitors and separated them into two groups, Blue League and Gold League, having each participant wrestle every other competitor in his respective block. Bryan Danielson and Eddie Kingston emerged at the top of the Blue League while Jon Moxley, Jay White and Swerve Strickland locked themselves in a Gold League three-way tie. Kingston and Moxley would win their league finals, and the Mad King would ultimately emerge as the C2's lone victor and the inaugural AEW Continental Crown Champion.

Since then, Kingston has defended the AEW Continental Crown in singles matches, treating it like a singles title rather than a trophy. After five successful defenses and one double count out, Kingston would lose the AEW Continental Crown to Kazuchika Okada on the March 20th edition of AEW Dynamite.

(Photo: AEW)

Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan clarified that the AEW Continental Crown will continue to be defended in singles action until the AEW Continental Classic return this fall, where it will be up for grabs again in the round robin tournament.

"Whoever is the champion going into the Continental Classic, they will put the title up in the tournament, and they will have the opportunity to retain it by winning the tournament," Khan explained. "The Continental title will be defended under the Continental Rules for the rest of the year. No outside interference. Nobody allowed it ringside."

Okada has about eight months of defenses ahead of him if he is to defend the title within the C2 itself.

"Whoever is the champion coming out of AEW Full Gear, they will defend the title in the Continental Classic," Khan continued. "And then at AEW Worlds End, we will determine who will be the Continental Champion at the end of 2024.

"I'm very excited about going into the tournament this year with [an established] champion, somebody having the opportunity to defend the title throughout the year and at so many great events. Everybody wants to be in the Continental Classic. We had a great lineup of wrestlers in it last year, but it's also going to be a lot of pressure. Here we are in March. Realistically, we're about eight months from the start of the next Continental Classic. It's going to be a long haul."

AEW Dynamite returns this Wednesday, March 27th at 8 PM ET on TBS.

Immaculate: Sydney Sweeney Reveals Intense Final Scene Took Surprising Amount of Takes https://comicbook.com/horror/news/immaculate-sydney-sweeney-reveals-intense-final-scene-took-one-take/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 136b5971-94cc-4429-9dbf-b281479af22e

Immaculate hit theaters this weekend, and the new horror movie is the latest theatrical release to star Sydney Sweeny. In the new film, Sweeny plays Cecilia, "an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside." Unfortunately, things take a dark turn for Cecilia when it becomes clear that "her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors." ComicBook.com recently spoke to Sweeney about the project, and she teased some fun bloopers. During the chat, Sweeney also revealed the movie's intense final scene only took one take.

"One," Sweeney replied when asked how many times she had to film the movie's big final scene. "Yeah, that's the first take ... We were actually rushed for the day. We were at a location that we didn't have a lot of time at and we had some stunt work that we had to get in. So we needed more time for other scenes. So we didn't rehearse or plan anything for that particular one that you saw ... We just set up the camera. I was like, 'Okay, we'll start here, we'll walk over here, we'll come back and we'll just see what happens.' And Mike's [Mohan] like, 'Do you wanna rehearse, walk through it?' I'm like, 'No, let's just go for it and see what happens.'"

You can watch our interview with Sweeney at the top of the page.

Sydney Sweeny Shares Behind-the-Scenes Immaculate Photos:

Sweeney has shared some gory behind-the-scenes videos from her time making the movie. You can check out some of the posts below:

"Two thumbs up cause @immaculatemovie is in theaters now and you can buy tickets," she wrote earlier this week.

"Made a little movie in Italy last year with the help of some incredible people," she added in a post yesterday. "To my entire cast and crew, I can't thank you enough for such an amazing experience. none of this would have been possible without your trust, hard work, and fun crazy energy. watching this movie come to life after so many years has been a dream come true. now I'm probably gonna spam my insta with some pics and there's fake blood so I'm sorry in advance but it's a horror film and you can't not be drenched in blood. ok byeeee love you :) go see @immaculatemovie in theaters now."

What Are Critics Saying About Immaculate?

The movie is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% critics score with some reviews calling it "intense" and "deeply unsettling."

In addition to Sweeney, Immaculate also stars ?lvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco. The movie was directed by Michael Mohan and has been Rated R for "strong and bloody violent content, grisly images, nudity, and some language." The film marks the first movie Sweeney has produced.

3 Body Problem Cast Talks Bonding In Real Life https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/3-body-problem-cast-talks-bonding-in-real-life/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 18:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 9eb56c6c-cf3f-4844-8ad9-2c2e1987285b

3 Body Problem is now streaming on Netflix, and it was adapted from the award-winning sci-fi novel by Liu Cixin that follows a group of scientists and intelligence agents who must figure out how to stop aliens from coming to Earth in 400 years. The show features a tight-knit group of friends played by Jess Hong (Jin Cheng), Jovan Adepo (Saul Durand), Eiza Gonz?lez (Augustina "Auggie" Salazar), John Bradley (Jack Rooney), and Alex Sharp (Will Downing). During the 3 Body Problem premiere, ComicBook.com asked Hong and Sharp if they were able to hang out with their onscreen pals in real life.

"I mean, it was a little difficult because it was 2021," Hong explained when asked if she got the opportunity to bond with her castmates. "Covid times were still very permeated through the scene, so we didn't get that many opportunities to meet up outside. But whenever we were on set, we're such an eclectic bunch, we're so chaotic, so in between takes, there was always banter and I don't know, this crazy talk we did. So Jovan Adepo and I actually went to Oxford University, we went to meet a couple of physics students. I realized it was so that we could get into the vibe and so that was a great little bonding day for us."

"Well, it was kind of hard to hang out at first because we weren't allowed to, but some of us did anyways," Sharp explained. "But no, I mean, going through, making something of this size is a pretty bonding thing in itself, and we all were really, really close. Jovan and I, in preparation, we like to call it preparation. Just drank a lot of gin. We were like, 'We're working right now.'"

While some of the cast had the opportunity to hang out together, others were left on their lonesome. Zine Tseng played the younger version of Ye Wenjie in the series, which means she did not get to share any scenes with many of her peers. We asked Tseng if she had any opportunities to hang out with the rest of the main cast, and she had a pretty funny response.

"I was completely isolated," Tseng explained. "And they were doing all the fancy stuff and pub drinking while I was in the mud group and the prison."

However, Tseng still had fun getting to act in different decades.

"Oh, I really enjoyed the nineties," she shared. "It's vintage and modern and science bubbling up at the same time. It's very amazing to see a helicopter in the nineties, right?"

Immaculate: Sydney Sweeney Reveals Horror Movie Has Some Hilarious Bloopers https://comicbook.com/horror/news/immaculate-sydney-sweeney-reveals-horror-movie-hilarious-bloopers-madame-web/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 15:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2ad60563-3d9b-472d-be03-e351ab98bbe6

A lot of movies hit theaters this weekend, including Immaculate, the new horror film starring Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus, Euphoria). This makes the third film in recent months Sweeney has starred in after Anyone But You and Madame Web. In the movie, Sweeney stars as Cecilia, "an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Cecilia's warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors." The movie is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% critics score with some reviews calling it "intense" and "deeply unsettling." Despite the movie's dark themes, it sounds like Sweeney had a fun time making the movie. While chatting with ComicBook.com, the star revealed the film has some hilarious bloopers.

"They both take different physical...," Sweeney shared with a laugh when asked what was more physically demanding - wearing the fake pregnancy belly in Immaculate or hanging upside down as Spider-Woman in Madame Web. "I'm trying to think of which one's harder. There's a lot of technical things when you're running with a belly, and I was barefoot and it was really cold, and I ended up being too fast for the guys to be able to catch me."

"It's really funny," she continued. "There's some outtakes of me running and I'm just still running and I'm like, 'Wait, where did the guys go?' And you see on the camera, the guy is starting to slowly fall back further and further and further because they couldn't keep up with me. So that was funny. But hanging upside down for a long time, you can get a little lightheaded. So that's the challenging part."

Who Stars in Immaculate?

In addition to Sweeney, Immaculate also stars ?lvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco. The movie was directed by Michael Mohan and has been Rated R for "strong and bloody violent content, grisly images, nudity, and some language." The film marks the first movie Sweeney has produced.

"I just wrapped the first film I've ever produced, Immaculate, with the most amazing cast and crew," Sweeney shared on Instagram last year. "I can't even begin to describe what an amazing experience it's been these past few months in Rome. I've learned so much and can't wait to share all the madness we created with you."

Immaculate is now playing in theaters.

WWE's Valhalla Reveals What Led to Classic Michael Cole Antlers Moment https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwes-valhalla-reveals-what-led-to-classic-michael-cole-antlers-moment/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 03:09:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar e2906e0c-0c9f-4b04-b7f0-d926f838d74b

WWE superstar Valhalla is an intimidating presence when she's in the ring, but that doesn't mean she's averse to having some fun, and one such moment took place earlier this month on Monday Night Raw. Those who watched the show will remember when Valhalla jumped on top of the commentator's desk, which understandably put Michael Cole and Pat McAfee on high alert for something crazy to happen. Instead, Valhalla took off her antlers and put them on Cole, and to say it made his day would be an understatement. The moment went viral and Cole didn't take them off for the rest of the match, and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Valhalla revealed that the entire moment was a complete surprise to him and most of WWE as well.

"Me, Ivar, and the camera guy are the only ones who knew we were doing that, so that was amazing," Valhalla said. "And it was the thing that I was like, 'I might get in trouble for this'. I legitimately might go to the back, and they'd be like, 'What in the world was that? You're fired.' But I knew just hearing Michael Cole talk about the antlers, and freak out about the antlers for so long, I was like, ''I've got to do something with this.' So I told Ivar. I was like, 'I think I'm going to climb on the commentator table, and put them on him.' He was like, 'Oh. That sounds fantastic.' So I did it, and Michael Cole, he wore them the whole match."

"So it was that perfect moment in wrestling where opportunity just meets so well with timing. And I hope it doesn't, because I do stuff on the side of the ring that a lot of managers can't get away with. I don't know. No one's told me to stop. So I'm just going to keep doing it," Valhalla said. "But I do this craziest stuff back there, and no one says anything to me. Might be too scared to say anything to me. I don't know."

"I climb on the apron, and I try to grab the other wrestlers. I'm on the commentary table. I'm taking their headsets off. I don't know how I found myself in this position, but I'm just going to keep riding it out, and ask for forgiveness not permission is the vibe right now," Valhalla said.

Valhalla isn't just having fun in WWE but is also expanding to the world of children's books with her first book From The Farm, To Our Table. The book releases this April, and she's already thinking of writing more in the future, including a project that appeals to her love of fantasy and magic.

"Yeah. So I love writing. It's something I do a lot, and it's just intimidating, your own worst critic, and I love reading fantasy books. Joe Abercrombie, Pierce Brown, and Brandon Sanderson are some of my favorite writers, and their world-building and stuff just blows me away," Rowe said. "So I do plan on writing more children's books, and I am also dabbling into my own fantasy stories, which is along the lines of a Joe Abercrombie, like battling magic, all the fun stuff. But I just read such good stuff, and I'm like, 'I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to live up to this,' but I'm trying. So no. I hope it is not the last thing I publish or the last thing I write. I'm going to try for more."

From The Farm, To Our Table is available for pre-order now, and will land in stores on April 2nd.
