5 ways you can add almonds to your kids’ diet.

5 ways you can add almonds to your kids’ diet.

You can add almonds to your diet in many forms. Raw, roasted, sprouted, soaked, as butter, as flour, as almond milk - honestly, your imagination and the time you want to spend in the kitchen is your only limit.  And it doesn’t matter what they look like or where they come from, if it’s an almond, it's good for you. Grab a handfull of almonds (~10 -12 almonds) and you will hold in your hand 90 calories, 3 grams of protein, 7 grams of heart-healthy fat, magnesium, manganese as well as Vitamin E. But none of the health benefits of almonds will matter to a 10-year-old fussy eater. Children have only one question about their food: Is it yucky or yummy?  And mind you, there’s only one right answer.

Here are 5 easy ways to add some almondy goodness into your kid’s diet:

Apple and almond butter sandwiches

This easy snack combines the health benefits of apples and almonds.

  1. Slice fresh organic apples into 6 thick loaf-like rounds.
  2. Spread 1 tablespoon of almond butter on the apple slices and sprinkle with hemp hearts and cacao nibs for an extra crunch.
  3. Stack the slices one on top of each other to form these cruncy, tasty apple sandwiches.

You have a healthy and tasty snack as easy as one, two, three. If your child is old enough you can include them in the process, and make it a fun ‘together activity’. Full recipe here.

Trail mix

When it comes to ease of making, nothing beats a trail mix. Just combine different types of nuts (almonds and cashews), dried fruits (chewy dried cherries and dates)  and something sweet (like a dark chocolate).  Seal it in a mason jar, and open it whenever you hear the phrase “Mommy I am hungry”. Your child may not know or care, but you can pat yourself on the back for giving them a healthy dose of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as a snack.

Almond meal muffins

Nothing says Mommy loves you like a freshly baked muffin. But if you are trying to reduce gluten and sugars and animal protein in your family’s diet, then muffins can be a bit of no-no. But there are some incredibly tasty gluten-free, vegan muffin recipes out there. And we fell head over heels for this one created by www.minimalisbaker.com

We tried it and they are moist like all muffins should be and jammed with flavour. Best thing about it though: just one bowl required. That’s the second best phrase a busy mom can hear.
